100th Session of the UNWTO Executive Council (Rovinj, Croatia, 27-29 May 2015)

This year’s UNWTO Executive council took place from 28th to 29th May 2015 with a rich program prepared for the participants, which lasted until Saturday 30th May 2015. Minister for Tourism Mr. Darko Lorencin also the second Vice-Chairman of the Council thanked for the trust and arrival and wished a pleasant and fruitful stay in Rovinj, Croatia. He also pointed out that Croatia has in recent year become an increasingly competitive tourist destination and briefly presented the key activates and direction of domestic tourism.

“Croatia has in recent years become an increasingly competitive tourist destination and now we are on 33th place among all countries in the world, which is in accordance with the Tourism Development Strategy. The growth is achieved by reducing tourism seasonality, raising the quality of service and supply, investment and quality education.
Although Croatia is still primarily perceived as a land of sun and sea, our task is to change it and show everyone that our country is much more than that. I would like to stress out the program Croatia 365, aimed at strengthening further offers, and highlight all the pearls of Croatia, from rich culture, history and tradition to the indigenous gastronomy. The growth of tourist traffic, especially in the off season, proves the success of our activities and we believe that we will extend the season and reduce seasonality, and thus increase tourism spending,” said Minister Lorencin.

At the 100th session, was discussed about the condition of international tourism, the work program of the organization in 2016 and 2017 and innovative solutions to cope with seasonality. Minister Lorencin presented a program of strengthening before and after the season – Croatia 365.

Apart from the official part, on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th May 2015, organizers prepared a rich accompanying program with presentation of Croatian tourism (and Istria) with an emphasis on gastronomy, natural beauty, culture and history of Croatia.

At Tobacco factory in Rovinj was organized a gala dinner during which the participants were introduced to the Istrian and Croatian gastronomic offer, with music performance of ensemble Lado. Side program was enriched with theatrical entertainment performance by Istra Inspirit that in a creative way displayed different time periods and themes of Istrian history and so tends to evoke the specifics of cultural and historical heritage of Istria.

Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has chosen Rovinj to be the host, on the session in the Spanish Santiago de Cipostela in June 2014. Croatia competed for the host with Egypt and Jamaica. Croatia is a member of UNWTO since 1993.
