After at the ceremony »Ljubljana. Green for you.” the city of Ljubljana turned on the green light, displayed the European Green Capital 2016 flag, opened a central information point “Point. For you.”, started with rich year round program of events and now also officially assumed the title of the greenest capital in Europe. The title was handed down by Bristol, the previous holder of the title European Green Capital, at the ceremony held in Brussels on 9 February 2016.

Ljubljana as the first Central and Southeastern European country is now also officially the holder of the European Green Capital title. For 2016 that is. An official opening ceremony will follow on 10 March 2016 in Ljubljana.

Next year Ljubljana will hand down the prestigious title to the German city of Essen. At the same time in Brussels a panel of twelve independent experts are evaluating the cities competing for the title of European Green Capital 2018. The finalists will be chosen among the city of Arad (Romania), Ghent (Belgium), Nijmegen and ‘s-Hertogenbosch (both Netherlands), Tallinn (Estonia), Umeå (Sweden) and Warsaw (Poland). The winner will be announced in June in Ljubljana.
