Winter magic is a special time of year, providing amazing conditions for winter sports, so Carinthia hosts many sport events. Visitors can enjoy in numerous events, one of this events is also the speed skating marathon which is held every January and taking place at Lake Weissensee. From 21st January to 4th February 2017, the lake welcomes this world’s largest ice sport spectacle, The Dutch Alternative 11-Cities-Tour, speed skating marathon, with over 4,000 participants in disciplines 50, 100 and 200 kilometres. Speed skating has been practiced in the Netherlands as an urban transport option and as a sport for over 230 years. Since the canals and lakes in the Netherlands don’t always freeze any more, an alternative was sought and found at Lake Weissensee (6,5 km2 large) in 1988. The ice skating marathons are open for everyone, so an unmanageable number of speed skaters cope with the 200 km and the world record which is set on natural ice at lake Weissensee, stands at 5 hours and 11 minutes.
The sunniest region in Austria, together with Carinthian/Austrian hospitality and their services on highest level, put the Carinthia region among Austrian top evolving region.
