HOME TO THE OLDEST VINE IN THE WORLD

Situated near the Drava river, this 16-century house with a vine facade is within walking distance from the city centre and is also reachable by car. It has become one of the city’s main attractions. After all, it is the home to the 400 year-old vine, called “žametna črnina” (Blue Franconian). The Old Vine actually holds a Guinness World Record, as the oldest vine in the world that still produces precious fruit. The Old Vine is recognized as a symbol of the rich wine culture of Maribor, Styria and Slovenia.

The Old Vine House attracts lovers of good wine and everyone, who can relate to the cultivating of a vine, wine making, and the preservation of outstanding Styrian wine-growing heritage – whether as a professional or just as an amateur.

A spacious courtyard overlooking the Drava river on one side and the old vine on the other create an incredible venue for events during the summer. Up to 100 guests can be invited for a standing reception. With some additional lighting it can be turned into a perfect place for a concert.

The inner part of this historical building is composed of several smaller spaces, where the history of the oldest vine is documented by a permanent exhibition. It can be used for smaller receptions, press and other conferences. The largest room can host up to 40 people in a theatre or banquet set-up or up to 80 persons for a standing reception. An eye-catching detail is a 35 metre-long floor mosaic, made up of more than 1 million pieces. It symbolizes the flow of the Drava River and pays homage to the history of Maribor through the implication of symbols, names, and important names. Read more about the mosaic here.

Our top tip for event organisers

Old Vine House is a special historical venue for business and any other events. In addition to guided wine tastings of some of the most renowned local wines, guests will gain insight into a fascinating history of wine making in Maribor and the Podravje Wine region. Wine tasting is led by professional sommeliers. For even more authentic experience some of the local wine-makers can join your event to answer questions about the process. Degustation can be followed by a dinner as a »marriage of food and wine« performed by one of the excellent chefs. In addition, some live music background is always a good idea. For a more interactive afternoon or evening gathering with your team or business partners, we would suggest a competition in blind wine tasting .
