From 21 – 29 August Maribor will turn into a capital of culture.

The traditional Lent Festival has been one of the few events not to be placed among the cancelled events this year. The Festival has become a trademark of Maribor over the past 30 years. Despite all the corona-related limitations and restrictions, the organiser, the Narodni dom Maribor, has decided to host the event. By doing so, they want to support the musicians and cultural workers, who have been deeply affected by the epidemic.

The larger venues of the previous years have been replaced with several smaller, more intimate outdoor venues. Although there might not be as many spotlights compared to the larger venues, the intimate spaces will enable the crowd to be even more connected to the performers. The Lent Festival is going back to its roots and its original idea of being completely different from commercialised festivals.

38 different venues

38 different venues are included in this year’s Lent Festival. Particularly eye-catching are the outdoor city terraces and courtyards that have always been hotspots of the social life. This time, the doors and fences will also be open for visitors. Because of the safety distance between the visitors, the number of guests at all venues is limited. Each venue has a pre-arranged maximum number of visitors, meaning that there will be a limited amount of tickets available.

The Lent Festival has always been known for hosting numerous foreign musical and folk groups, as well as theatre shows. Due to this years’ epidemic and problems with border crossings, this year’s programme features mainly regional artists. Albeit, the organisers have also announced a few foreign artists as part of the JazzLent.

The Drava promenade will once again be hosting the best Slovenian chefs. The Sladolent Festival has been recognised as one of the best culinary events held in Slovenia. The Festival has hosted every Slovenian Michelin-awarded chef and attracts large crowds each year.
