Hotel Bohinj in Ribčev Laz on the shore of Lake Bohinj has reopened after a complete renovation initiated in 2020.

Owned by crypto-millionaire Damian Merlak, the four-star hotel offers 69 rooms and relies on a combination of traditional and modern.

The hotel now boasts a small wellness centre with an outdoor pool, which will have heated water even in winter, and in the garden, they have arranged a fireplace for hosting outdoor events. The architects think it is particularly important that the guests of the hotel experience all the beauties of Bohinj, including the fact that they are swimming in one of the cleanest waters of Slovenia – Lake Bohinj.

The silver lining of the hotel is a story of four people who were the first to conquer Triglav in 1778 and who have a monument near the hotel. With elements rekindling the famous deeds of Bohinj’s heroes, they want to intertwine old stories and local culture in a modern manner.

The director of Alpinia, who runs Merlak’s Hotels in Bohinj, is also convinced that the decision to renovate was the right one. Jure Repanšek said: “Immediately after reservations were available, there was great interest for staying at the hotel and after just a few days, the hotel was almost fully booked for the first week of August.”

In an extensive renovation, the hotel was made earthquake-proof with metal construction. This also gave the architects space for balconies. They replaced windows and doors, thoroughly renovated the interior, set up the restaurant, reception, wellness centre, conference hall and club room.

Focus on local heritage

“Since Bohinj has in recent years together with the tourist association, local craftsmen and farmers created a beautiful story, we wanted to follow this in our interior design. When designing the interior, we relied on the haystack typical for Bohinj, which has a cross construction in the middle, and thus recreated a walk through a typical hayrack in the hotel corridors, which are usually boring,” said Špela Videčnik, the co-creator of the new design.

The hotel will strive to offer and present local specialities and culinary delicacies. Hotel Bohinj invites guests to experience Bohinj in its authenticity and visit their brand new hotel that places emphasis on local dishes and suppliers.
