At the Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb, from 7 to 9 September, the CroValv 2023 Congress brought together 300 international experts in valvular heart diseases.


The 6th Congress of the Working Group on Valvular Heart Diseases of the Croatian Cardiac Society hosted numerous international attendees. CroValv 2023, organized by Prof. Dr. Jozica Šikić, PhD, the president of the Working Group on Valvular Heart Diseases and the head of the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Diseases at Clinical Hospital Sveti Duh, took place from 7 to 9 September in Zagreb.

This biennial congress regularly hosts around 300 Croatian and international cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, neurologists, family medicine doctors, specialists, nurses and other professionals involved in the treatment of patients with valvular heart diseases.

Exchanging experiences and expert know-how

At the Sheraton Zagreb Hotel, the most eminent Croatian experts in the fields of cardiology and cardiac surgery, especially in the areas of imaging methods and interventional and surgical methods for treating valvular pathology, participated in the congress. Besides lecturers from Croatia, several distinguished foreign speakers participated this year, including Prof. Juan Luis Zamorano, head of cardiology at Ramon y Cajal Hospital in Madrid and president of the European Association of Echocardiography; Prof. Madalina Garbi from Cambridge (UK), secretary of the Valvular Heart Disease Section of the European Society of Cardiology; Dr. Wael Jaber, head of the Cardiovascular Imaging Division at Cleveland Clinic in the USA; Prof. Francesco Burzotta, head of Cardiology at Gemelli Hospital in Italy; Dr. Christian Eek from Norway, one of the leading experts in TAVI implantation in Europe; Dr. J. A. Gomez, head of interventional cardiology at Bellvitge Hospital in Barcelona; and Prof. Matjaž Bunc, head of interventional cardiology at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana.

The congress was organized in the form of lectures across various thematic sections over three days. The goal was to expose and update all the latest knowledge and achievements in the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of valvular heart diseases from the perspective of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, as well as to exchange mutual experiences so that they could be implemented into daily clinical practice promptly.

Congresses of this kind are essential for physician education and the acquisition of new knowledge, which is crucial for providing the best possible care to patients and following the trends in cardiology in Europe and the world, according to the current guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology.

The excellent attendance at this year’s congress confirms the importance of holding such gatherings, contributing significantly to the promotion of Croatian medicine and the development of health tourism, as well as the promotion of Zagreb’s cultural heritage.
