In a world that is increasingly feeling the effects of climate change and the urgent need for sustainable practices, GPM is once again at the forefront of change. Today, GPM announces the release of the world’s first performance-based competence standard for sustainability leadership.

The GPM Competence Standard for Leadership in Sustainability is a pioneering effort that offers a robust competence framework for professionals in the sustainability sector. This framework provides a clear pathway for organizations to develop and evaluate the crucial competencies needed for sustainable practices.

The groundbreaking standard comprises eight core competence units. These units are backed by Elements of Competency which elucidate the principal components of work performance within a Unit. The Performance Criteria further specify the nature and level of performance essential to establish competency in each element. Moreover, the standard also enumerates the Required Skills and Required Knowledge vital for sustainability leadership.

As the sustainability field continues to burgeon, with businesses and governments globally recognizing its paramount importance, there is a pressing need for standards that can reliably measure performance and competence. In the past decade, the sustainability sphere has transformed from a niche concept into a fundamental business strategy. More than ever, it’s essential to have a performance-based standard that ensures the efficacy and credibility of sustainability leaders.

GPM President Dr. Joel Carboni remarked, “The introduction of the GPM Competence Standard for Leadership in Sustainability is not just another milestone for us; it’s a beacon for the entire sustainability community. In these pivotal times, when sustainable practices are not just preferred but vital, our new standard serves as a reliable guide to empower and validate the proficiency of sustainability leaders across the globe. Together, we’re building a resilient and sustainable future.”
