The Meetings Star award ceremony honoured the best regional hotels, destinations and most influential individuals in the meetings industry. We talked to the finalists of the esteemed competition, including Jure Repanšek, General Manager of Hotel Bohinj, who discussed why effective leadership is about inspiring teams to deliver their best and why he believes true hospitality is a philosophy.

INTRO: Can you describe your hotel using only four words?

Spectacular sustainable Alpine retreat.

Q1: What differentiates your hotel from others?

Exceptional architecture: the embodiment of the lake and Alpine landscape, with attention to detail.

Funky character: authenticity, youthful spirit, and relaxed atmosphere.

Amazing vibe: perfect escape from the everyday.

Enthusiastic employees / the level of hospitality: while a beautiful hotel is a great asset, the dedicated hearts of our staff truly make a difference. We’re proud of our team.

Customization and flexibility: we are taking pride in accommodating guests’ preferences and needs first.

Authentic experiences: offering guests to immerse themselves in local culture, traditions, or activities through specially designed experiences.

Sustainability initiatives: Hotel Bohinj is located in the Triglav National Park, which means that coexistence with nature is crucial. Our efforts have helped us acquire the EU Eco Label and Slovenia Green certificates.

Q2: What are the novelties of your hotel in 2024?

Our biggest novelty this year is not per se in Hotel Bohinj, but directly connected with it. In 2024, we shall be introducing our latest addition to Alpinia Group, Vila Muhr, a charming retreat nestled just steps away from Hotel Bohinj. The villa will offer four boutique rooms, the largest of which will have 180 square meters. In addition to the mentioned rooms, the villa will have a restaurant and a congress hall, which will be an excellent addition to congress tourism. Vila Muhr will represent a perfect getaway where history meets contemporary elegance in a setting of unparalleled natural beauty.

“Effective leadership is about more than just giving orders—it is about inspiring and empowering teams to deliver their best.”

Q3: As one of the leading experts in the industry, what are your thoughts on the ChatGPT craze? Is this another marketing hype or an actual tool that will make boring, routine jobs a lot easier?

ChatGPT represents a significant shift, especially in its approach towards communication. While it is true that relying solely on text generated by ChatGPT may not be sufficient for standing out, leveraging it as a valuable tool can enhance productivity and creativity. It has the potential to streamline routine tasks, freeing up valuable time for more strategic thinking and innovation. However, it is essential to use it thoughtfully, combining its capabilities with human insight and expertise to achieve the best results.

Q4: What skills should a 21st-century hotelier possess?

Based on our beliefs, we would put in front human-centred values & skills: Business oriented, but with heart.

While business insight is important, successful hoteliers should also lead with heart. We should understand that hospitality is about more than just profits, it is about creating memorable experiences that leave a lasting impression.

Empathy and hospitality
A deep sense of empathy and genuine care for guests’ well-being is at the heart of hospitality. We, hoteliers, should have the ability to connect with guests on a personal level, understand their needs, and make them feel valued and appreciated.

Flexibility and adaptability
In a world where change is constant, being flexible is the key. Therefore, we should be able to pivot quickly, whether it is adjusting to new guest preferences, embracing innovative technologies, or responding to unexpected challenges.

Inspiring leadership
Effective leadership is about more than just giving orders—it is about inspiring and empowering teams to deliver their best. We should lead by example, fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment where every team member feels motivated and valued.

Sustainability-oriented
Hoteliers should also understand the importance of preserving our planet for future generations. Therefore, we should be committed to sustainable practices, minimizing waste, conserving resources, and protecting the environment while still providing exceptional experiences for guests.

Q5: We cannot avoid discussing the sustainable transformation of our industry. What must we do to create a world where more than nine billion people can live decently within planetary boundaries?

It is all about the change one can make. It is about sustainable choices and changing habits … it’s the sum of every incremental effort that pushes us forward. Each small piece, when fitted just right, contributes to the big picture of sustainability. Whether it’s the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, or collaborating with local economies, every move brings us closer to our shared vision.

Q6: What is your definition of true hospitality?

In essence, true hospitality is a philosophy—a way of being that lifts the human experience and leaves a legacy of care, kindness, and connection.

“It is about sustainable choices and changing habits … it’s the sum of every incremental effort that pushes us forward.”

Q7: Can you name one problem the entire meetings industry should solve together?

One of the top priorities here would be development of the human resources. As hospitality revolves around people, it’s essential to prioritize caring, supportive staff. With the rise of technologies, maintaining a human touch is key to delivering exceptional experiences. That involves investing in training, promoting employee well-being, fostering diversity, and offering career growth opportunities.

Q8: Do you enjoy podcasts? Which is your favourite?

I do. Podcasts are such a pleasant way of expanding horizons on so many different levels. Currently: New Heights.

Q9: What is the best travel advice you have ever received?

It might be a cliché, but it finds me the most: Collect memories, not things.
Whether it’s hiking to a breathtaking viewpoint, attending a local festival, or trying a new activity, these moments will stay with you long after the trip is over.

Q10: If you could take anything home from your favourite hotel, what would it be?

Our slippers are made from recycled plastic bottles. 😊 They are a cosy reminder of such a pleasant stay in Hotel Bohinj, at least until the next visit when you receive a fresh pair, carrying you on new adventures and creating even more amazing memories along the way.
