AN ARMY BARRACKS TURNED COMMUNAL VENUE
What better way to repurpose and reimagine a former decaying army barracks than to return it to the community, make it a vibrant communal area, and breathe new life into the lifeless, brick blocks? In Prague’s trendiest district, Karlin, they did just that with Kasárna Karlín. The former cultural barracks, where soldiers had to march for over a century, is now an event venue that doubles as a summer open-air cinema, trendy bar area, and communal space.

One of the most unique bars within the complex is the former army swimming pool, which has been transformed into a cosy café. It offers a wide range of drinks – from a selection of coffee to Kročehlavy beer.

Repurposing a dilapidated army barracks
The most suitable space for hosting events is also the largest – a former garage that doubles as a music club (for up to 200 attendees). During the day, the venue often hosts private parties and conferences. Next door, event attendees will find a bar with a unique art gallery. The entire hall and bar can be opened on one side and connected to the outdoor space. The genius loci of the venue is the iconic Unicorn by František Skala – one of the landmarks of the Karlín Barracks. Event attendees can also climb to the top of a five-ton steel Knitted Tower, designed by academic sculptor Čestmír Suška and carved from a steel tank.
This hip communal area might be reminiscent of its bigger brothers in Berlin, but its character is distinctively local. Kasárna Karlín is a best practice case of repurposing a dilapidated, colossal building and transforming it into a multipurpose venue. Unsurprisingly, event organisers have been flocking here.
