Kuoni Tumlare Congress’s partnership with DrupalCon Europe exemplifies how a professional congress organizer (PCO) can evolve from a logistics partner to a driving force behind the event’s sustainability transformation, achieving measurable environmental and social outcomes.

Background

DrupalCon is a flagship global conference series for the Drupal community, featuring thousands of developers, marketers and digital professionals. The 2024 edition in Barcelona gathered over 1,100 attendees from sixty-seven countries with over 100 engaging sessions, four inspiring keynote talks, workshops and community activities. The 2022 edition took place in Prague, and it was a special edition because 1168 attendees gathered in person after two years of pandemic!

Sustainability Vision and Strategy

Sustainability is not a one-off initiative, but a long-term, strategic commitment embedded into the DNA of DrupalCon. Together with the Drupal Association, Kuoni Tumlare Congress continues to integrate sustainable practices across all editions of the event including past ones like Prague, and future ones to come.

Each Congress is an opportunity to advance shared sustainability goals, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to build on progress year after year.

Key Sustainability Achievements

  • 24.3% reduction in carbon emissions compared to previous editions. This was achieved through careful planning of venue selection, transportation options, and energy use.
  • Near-zero event waste was accomplished by partnering with local vendors, emphasising sustainable materials and implementing comprehensive waste sorting and recycling programmes.
  • Local food suppliers and plant-based menus were prioritised to reduce the event’s environmental impact and support local economies.
  • Equitable access was guaranteed by offering travel and registration grants to ensure diverse and inclusive participation, making the event accessible to a broader community.
Full stakeholder engagement: attendees, sponsors and partners were actively involved through sustainability contests and challenges, such as low-emission travel initiatives, fostering a culture of shared responsibility.

A Data-Driven Legacy

Real-time tracking of travel emissions, food waste, and stakeholder feedback allowed for transparent reporting and continuous improvement. These efforts didn’t just improve the 2024 experience – they set a new benchmark for future DrupalCons, including the 2025 edition in Vienna.

A Model for Sustainable Conferences

DrupalCon Europe 2024 proves that sustainability and scale are not mutually exclusive. With the right partners and vision, large international events can minimise environmental impact while maximising social value.

“Drupal holds the values of sustainability, diversity and inclusivity in high standards. DrupalCon, as the international Drupal conference, upholds these same values. In this, it found Kuoni Tumlare to be an exemplary partner, setting a new standard in tech for cutting emissions, achieving near-zero waste, and promoting DE&I. The worldwide Drupal Community is grateful for a partnership that delivers a responsible, community-driven experience with real human impact,” says Imre Gmelig Meijling, Member of the Board of Directors at the Drupal Association and Advisory Committee for DrupalCon Europe.
