WELLNESS EXPERT WHO PLAYS THE SECOND FIDDLE IN MICE

LOCATION

Hévíz is a destination where thermal water was not only an extra feature but the main impetus for the development of its thermal tourism story. The mineral-rich thermal water flows into a famous thermal lake considered a tourist icon of Hungary. This picture-postcard setting is one of the main features that attracts visitors seeking to recover, enjoy the pleasantly warm water or simply feel good. In the immediate vicinity of the lake, guests have been frequenting the Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa for decades.

The abundant verdant surfaces encircling the hotel evoke a sense of lavish privacy.

This storied hotel boasts a rich tradition and was among the first to claim five stars in Hévíz. Its surroundings are incredibly tidy, offering everything a guest would expect from a world-class wellness environment: serenity, a natural setting and a relaxed atmosphere. The abundant verdant surfaces encircling the hotel evoke a sense of lavish privacy, prompting guests to pamper themselves in the ample relaxation spots and indulge in an array of activities. The hotel has successfully combined tradition and modern wellness offerings, solidifying its role as a first choice for guests seeking quality service, spaciousness, and holistic relaxation when selecting accommodation in Hévíz.

ACCESSIBILITY

Even though the destination’s infrastructure is, broadly speaking, less than optimal, the hotel ensures flexibility and comfort upon arrival.

Hévíz is reasonably accessible but not without some predicaments. The closest airport, Hévíz–Balaton, only offers seasonal flights, which is why most business guests travel via Budapest or Graz. Upon reaching those cities, they must drive for another two to two-and-a-half hours. Without a rent-a-car or shuttle, traversing these regions is rather cumbersome. In other words, business events here must be thoughtfully planned. Hévíz is far from an ideal hub regarding event logistics. Indeed, the location is perfect for wellness and pampering, but less suitable for on-site operations, especially outside the main tourist season. Still, Lotus Therme makes arrivals and stays here easier thanks to the spacious parking area and an electric charging station. Guests who arrive with their own transport will undoubtedly cherish this. Even though the destination’s infrastructure is, broadly speaking, less than optimal, the hotel ensures flexibility and comfort upon arrival.

COLD STARTER - Architecture and aesthetics

When inaugurated, the architecture of Lotus Therme was thoughtful and advanced. The central, open lobby, featuring two wings and a pool in the epicentre of the complex, elicited sighs of awe thanks to its luxurious, functional and spatial balance. Even now, the facade is well-maintained and beautifully integrated into the surroundings of Hévíz. Kudos to the architects for creating a design that has aged like fine wine.

However, the interior is far from brand-new. Soft natural tones, wooden elements and the warmth of the ambience do create an inviting atmosphere, but, truth be told, the interior seems stuck between a Swiss wellness centre from the nineties and a typical Hungarian public spa. What was once a fad seems obsolete and cliché today. The interior decoration deserves a special chapter. To put it nicely, it is eclectic, placed without much thought. Far from achieving a visual coherence, the interior is a conglomerate of motifs, colours and elements that destroy the zen image the hotel is supposed to evoke. If you visit during the winter holidays, you will be greeted by an explosion of kitsch that would befit a children’s sanatorium but seems completely unsuitable in a hotel of this category. “Less is more” could have been the guiding principle of the interior ambience, but it seems the management chose a diametrically opposite philosophy.

WARM ENTRÉE - The staff and the culinary experience

The staff sincerely endeavour to foster a relaxed and hospitable environment. We encountered several kind and professional staff members who know how to create a warm reception. Yet, too often the service was too slow and somewhat too easygoing – not ideal for business guests who appreciate effectiveness.

We were positively surprised by the breakfast, which stands out as a five-star experience.

The selection of dishes is diverse, presented beautifully, and well-labelled. We were most impressed by the station with an array of Hungarian cold cuts and the front cooking station. In the buffet section, the desserts and pastries stood out, as well as the incredibly brisk waiters who elegantly attended to guests in the blink of an eye, despite the packed room. Drawbacks? The instant coffee and generic store-bought juices have no place in such a hotel. This is a tiny detail that they should address. We must laud the utter cleanliness of public areas, further contributing to the excellent holistic impression.

MAIN COURSE – The meetings offering at the hotel

Hotel rooms

The basic room seems caught somewhere in time. The pastel carpets and the beech furniture create a retro ambience that is increasingly scarce in modern five-star hotels. Despite these visual flops, the bed is compact, extremely comfortable and ensures guests wake up rested. An additional advantage is the balcony. If you are fortunate, you will enjoy the views of the central pool area. We were not that fortunate, admiring the recycling courtyard instead. The bathroom is tiny, featuring a shower divided from the bathroom only by an antique plastic curtain. All these signs suggest that the room is in dire need of a renovation. The tacky ambience is completed by a slightly kitsch photo that adds no value to the room. The only silver lining is the illumination – the lights are functional, warm, and intuitive to use. Evidently, the hotel’s target group has long been traditional wellness guests. Yet, given the new kids in town, the hotel will need to renovate its rooms to retain the five-star status.

Meetings centre

Events are doubtless secondary in light of Lotus Therme’s dominant wellness programme. Three conference rooms, measuring 75 square metres each, are suitable for meetings, educational courses and boutique corporate events. If both halls are combined, they can accommodate up to 120 attendees. For relaxed business events, that is more than enough. Technically, the equipment is solid, the air-conditioning is reliable, and the acoustics are apt. However, there are no outstanding elements or a separate congress area that would (and should) include an adjoining foyer, business lounge area, let alone accompanying services offered by other MICE-focused hotels. Overall, event organisers seeking to organise a boutique, relaxed event and combine it with wellness will find the offer satisfactory. However, those wanting to organise a large-scale business event, gala evening or trade fair will find Lotus simply too boutique and not flexible enough.

DESSERT – The extras

Lotus Therme’s broad array of activities complements business events. Guests can enjoy four sand tennis courts, a modern fitness centre, rent bicycles, try InfrSlim X, yoga, archery, water gymnastics and aerobics, go hiking or even attempt horse riding. The programme includes daily sports and wellness activities, thus creating a perfect opportunity to relax after long meetings. For incentive groups or after-work activities, this is an ideal offering that elevates the entire experience and creates a pleasant balance between work and relaxation.

FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES

We had not perused so many promotional banners and sales ads in a room for ages. In an era when elegant digital solutions can replace traditional printed materials, this old-school approach seems redundant. There is another caveat: event attendees often have to share the same corridors as the wellness guests, donning spa robes and sauntering through the hotel. Sometimes, this can be awkward.

TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES

The wellness experience remains exemplary, courtesy of the phenomenal healing thermal water. The salt room, sound baths, saunas, and thermal baths all ensure holistic regeneration after an event. The relaxed ambience and pristine surroundings create the perfect retreat from classic business hotels.

SUSTAINABLE ENDEAVOURS

We did not come across any clear sustainable approach. The hotel’s cosmetics come in tiny bottles without eco certificates. To boot, waste management and water saving are not particularly emphasised. There is room for improvement, especially in transparent and consistent communication.

FINAL IMPRESSION AND CREDIBILITY

do not overlook the abundant green setting that seems tailor-made for incentive programmes and experiences.

The hotel practically never rests and is booked throughout the year. Hence, the question arises: why should they even develop the MICE product? Even after our visit, it is clear that the hotel’s focus lies not on business guests, but elsewhere. Lotus Therme is an extraordinary space for relaxation, but only partially appropriate for congress groups. Its strength does not lie in a business approach, but in the serene, healing environment of Hévíz. If you seek inspiring nature, wellness treatments and a less formal business environment, Lotus is your go-to. If you require serious event infrastructure, though, it would be wise to consider other alternatives, as the city offers many quality venues. Still, do not overlook the abundant green setting that seems tailor-made for incentive programmes and experiences. This area could represent a development opportunity.

We must note that prices in Hévíz are generally high in most hotels here. In terms of price, Lotus Therme can be compared to its newer and technologically better-equipped hotels. However, the competition offers more capacities and better value for money. That is not to say the hotel is not a quality choice. On the contrary, it has a lot of potential – it is just missing some extra incentive focus.
