HIDDEN GUEST: Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery

This was our third evaluation of Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery. The hotel has not disappointed us once. Since our first visit, much has changed: the ownership of the hotel and winery is now in different hands, as the hotel has become part of the ultra-luxury Relais & Châteaux. Yet, despite the changes, the location remains the key asset that continues to impress.

Today, the estate covers 46 hectares peppered with olive groves and vineyards.

The term stancija (estate) originated during the period when Istria was divided between the Venetian Republic and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It refers to a vast, rural estate with numerous facilities. Steeped in more than a century of history, stancija Menghetti sits in the very heart of Istria, near the scenic town of Bale. When it first opened, the estate, which measured 12 hectares, was more scarce, focused mainly on the revamped villa and a few adjoining facilities. Today, the estate covers 46 hectares peppered with olive groves and vineyards. In the meantime, rustic villas, a new pool and a wellness centre rose from the reddish terra rossa soil. In 2022, the estate inaugurated a world-class boutique winery. Today, Meneghetti is one of the most holistic boutique hotels in the region and a phenomenal wine destination in its own right. It doubles as one of the most sought-after Istrian event venues cherished by event organisers seeking authenticity, elegance and a straightforward narrative. Above all, Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery offers the rare value of modern luxury: serenity and complete privacy. Here, you are unbothered by the noise, crowds or curious onlookers. Your only surroundings are the olive groves, vineyards and the sense that Istria is yours only, even for a brief moment.

Meneghetti now couples ease of access with technical sophistication and peace of mind. In today’s world of luxury hospitality, that is a most rare commodity.

Accessing the Meneghetti estate is much easier today than it used to be. Now, the final kilometres to drive to the estate are on asphalt, no longer on dusty roads. Once guests arrive, they will be mesmerised by the tidy surroundings. Access is fast, discreet and stress-free. The owners transformed their defect into an advantage – the remote location has become a haven of privacy, supported by excellent infrastructure. The estate lies in the very centre of Istria, half an hour from Rovinj and Pula. Thanks to great connections, guests can easily reach the Pula Airport. Meneghetti offers organised transport with their shuttle vehicles, also to their nearby private beach. Guests can park in a guarded lot, and those arriving with EVs can also charge their cars at the modern electric charging stations installed next to the hotel. The entire area is under discreet control – the safety and security of guests is ensured without limiting their possibilities to explore. Abundant gravel roads surrounding the estate beckon guests to explore on foot or by bike and discover the scenic interior of Istria, famed for its vineyards, olive groves, and views that ooze timelessness.

The design of Menghetti Wine Hotel & Winery has been developing for over two decades. Today, the estate is a textbook example of how to evolve an authentic heritage building into a modern luxury destination. The result exceeds a mere hotel. The estate is a holistic environment that can host exceptional events.

The complex still consistently follows the narrative of the Istrian stancija. White Istrian rock, covered terraces, open fireplaces, and refined rural design form an architectural whole that pays homage to the local destination. While the interior is subdued, it represents rural elegance in its purest form. Massive furniture, cherry-picked pieces, subtle yet impressive illumination and authentic details dating to the 18th and 19th centuries imbue the facilities with depth, warmth and character. The horticulture surrounding the estate deserves an article on its own. Gardens, carpeted with aromatic Mediterranean herbs and strewn with thoughtful, hidden lounging areas, create a natural setting ideal for intimate events, diplomatic meetings, or unrivalled outdoor experiences. Meneghetti offers more than an event space; here, guests can experience Istria in its most authentic and modern light. In terms of architecture, that is an achievement.

Being a member of Relais & Châteaux raises expectations guests have of the cuisine, service and consistency of execution. Meneghetti meets them in a way relevant to event organisers: by providing reliable quality, transparent processes, and catering to demanding guests.

From the moment they arrive, guests experience tailored, personal, yet professional hospitality that ensures business meetings, networking events, and evening dinners run smoothly. The gastronomy is a modern take on Istrian cuisine. Simple dishes, such as homemade ravioli with truffles, reach a Michelin level thanks to precise execution and subtle refinements. All pasta is homemade, and the menu is flexible enough to adapt to various event types and groups.

A quintessential part of the stay is tasting excellent wines from Meneghetti’s on-site winery and their delectable olive oil. Both will imbue any event with local flavours. One key advantage is the breakfast catering, which can be tailored to business groups in terms of timing and menu. Groups can thus enjoy moreish morning bites in an informal, relaxed setting. The service is on a world-class level – professional, discreet and well-coordinated. At events where precision and reliability are paramount, this matters most. The team exudes confidence, but seems unbothered by ceremonial pressure. By acting professionally, they ensure an excellent experience for event organisers and events to flow flawlessly. Hotel rooms

We stayed in a two-storey hotel room in the so-called rustic part of the estate. The rooms are bedecked with traditional artisan furniture that harmonises with the walls in warm ochre shades and the massive flooring. Wooden beams add a special charm to the space and subtly connect modern comfort with the estate’s historical story.

The style can be described as a careful balance between rustic and modern; warm, elegant and timeless.

Select furniture is custom-made and sourced from a range of high-end manufacturers, reflecting its quality and attention to detail. The bed is extremely comfortable, not in small part thanks to the prestigious Frette bed linen. As expected, the bathroom is on a high level and features select Croatian-made cosmetics. Views of the vineyards are a key part of the experience and are another reason to stay here. The new residences and villas are equally impressive, designed in a modern, toned-down grey, white and blue colour palette. All rooms boast discreet industrial details that imbue the space with contemporary charm.

Meneghetti offers three elementary types of accommodation. Hotel rooms and suites make up the basic category, followed by spacious estate residences, ideal for families or more extended stays. The ultimate level of luxury is offered in opulent estate villas and houses that cater to the most demanding guests.

Meetings centre

Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery offers nine carefully designed event venues. Among these, the modern Garden Pavilion stands out, measuring 500 square metres. It is suitable for up to 180 event attendees in a theatre or banquet setting. The estate is not a classic conference hotel per se, but a boutique event venue. It comprises everything from restaurants (up to 150 attendees outdoor), wine cellars (up to 100 participants) and a VIP tasting room (for 12 attendees) to public and renowned locations such as The Oaks (from 120 to 150 guests) and the Meneghetti Beach Club (between 150 and 200 guests, depending on the layout). Another advantage of the estate is its potential for privatisation – it can be partially or fully privatised, ensuring a high level of privacy and seclusion. Menghetti is ideal for strategic meetings, incentive programmes, wine teambuildings, boutique conferences, diplomatic events, automotive launches and test drives or boutique social events, where the ambience and quality of execution play an equally important role as the content.

DESSERT – The extras

Guided wine and olive oil tours and tastings in the new Meneghetti winery are one of the estate’s most alluring features. The olive oil and wine tastings are a carefully curated journey through the Istrian terroir, enriched with an exclusive visit to the contemporary winery and its production area. The programmes are bespoke for incentive groups and business events, fostering an informal environment, the discovery of local stories, and authentic teambuilding. Savouring artisan wine and olive oil, and seeing the production, is a genuine, elegant, and memorable way to conclude the stay.

FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES

Meneghetti is not a destination for event organisers who are careful with their budgets. With the final development and holistic conclusion of the estate, the level of service has been raised. Consequently, the fees to host an event have grown, too. The enviable level of service, facilities and holistic experience simply demands a higher budget. If the budget is a key factor, Mengehetti may not be the most prudent choice. But event organisers and clients seeking outstanding quality, privacy, and top-tier execution should look no further than this estate, where the value exceeds the numbers.

TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES

Boho Beach is a private beach that opens in the summer. With some effort, you can privatise it for your event or incentive group. Set some three kilometres from the estate, overlooking the glistening Adriatic, it can accommodate up to 150 guests.

SUSTAINABLE ENDEAVOURS

The zero-kilometre philosophy is consistently adhered to in the kitchen and the winery. We were speechless when tasting the superb wines and olive oils made a few steps away. The farm-to-fork concept is not an illusion here. We do hope the estate aspires to earn a certificate and prove its traceability in gastronomy.

The ever-evolving Meneghetti estate remains loyal to the values set out by Miroslav Plišo. Whilst ambling around the superb facilities, you sense a feeling of calm; the estate oozes homeliness, consistency and reliability. Here, you are amidst a haven where every one of your wishes will be fulfilled.

Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery is a hotel that leaves no room for mediocrity.

Among boutique meeting hotels, it impresses with its wine story, phenomenal outdoor venues and holistic design that caters to demanding guests and event organisers. Yet, Meneghetti is not for everyone. It demands guests with a discerning palate, gourmet tendencies and an affinity for quality wine. Guests who tick these boxes are willing to make many compromises, even regarding accessibility. Those in the know come here because Mengehtti always exceeds expectations. Then, the magic ensues. Every event here is infused with a touch of Istrian magic. Meneghetti’s phenomenal package has virtually no shortcomings, except for one: typical of boutique luxury destinations, these hotels are not affordable. Yet quality comes with a price, and in this case, it is justified. Event attendees and organisers alike will have no reason to complain, at least those who know what to expect from a superb hotel.
