MESMERISING ARCHITECTURE AMID UNDULATING WINE HILLS

Sauska estate, in Hungary’s UNESCO-listed Tokaj-Hegyalja region, has rapidly become one of Central Europe’s standout wine destinations, thanks to its multidimensional experience attracting wine lovers, architects, and event planners.

Conceived by BORD Architectural Studio and refined with interiors by Tihany Design, the Sauska complex — often described as the “Tokaj UFO” — is defined by two intersecting, lens-shaped volumes that appear to hover over the hillside, framing panoramic views of vineyards and volcanic ridges beyond.

Visitors arriving at Sauska immediately sense that this is not merely a winery but a destination. Beneath the striking volumes, state-of-the-art winemaking facilities nestle into the hillside, while above ground the visitor spaces — including a restaurant, bar, terrace, and tasting lounge — blend modern hospitality and local terroir.

At the heart of the experience is Padi, a restaurant in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide Hungary, where refined seasonal menus are paired with Sauska’s wines and complemented by uninterrupted views across the undulating vineyard hills. A bar and terrace adjacent to Padi offer informal tasting settings that celebrate both classic Tokaji varieties and Sauska’s evolving portfolio of dry whites and sparkling wines.

Designed for wine-inspired events

While many visitors come for wine and architecture, the venue also positions itself as an event destination capable of hosting a range of private and corporate gatherings. According to tourism and hospitality listings, Sauska’s facilities can accommodate up to 180 guests for larger celebrations in its main event spaces, such as weddings, receptions, and business functions. Specific rooms and dining areas offer capacities suitable for groups of different sizes and formats.

Smaller, more intimate gatherings are equally well served through Sauska’s curated experiences — from guided tastings and cellar tours to seated dinners overlooking the vineyards. The restaurant and associated spaces are designed to be flexible, catering to groups ranging from casual wine enthusiasts to organised corporate events.

In an era when wine tourism is as much about storytelling and experience as it is about tasting, Sauska’s Tokaj complex stands out. It is a place where design and terroir intersect, where the built environment frames landscape and culture.
