The Municipality of Brda is the recipient of the Crystal Triglav, an award for the highest achievements in Slovenian tourism, as selected by FIJET Slovenia – the Association of Slovenian Travel Journalists at the Days of Slovenian Tourism event held in Radenci from 11 to 13 October 2016.
The president of FIJET Slovenia, Drago Bulc granted Franc Mužič, the longtime Mayor of the Municipality of Brda the Crystal Triglav award.
In 22 years of existence as an independent municipality Brda has greatly changed its appearance. From the relatively underdeveloped predominantly agricultural frontier area, the Municipality of Brda successfully integrated fruit-growing and wine making in tourism and become one of the most recognizable tourist areas in Slovenia. Today, Brda are famous for their excellent wines, the old tradition of olive growing and a superb gastronomic offer based on a centuries-old tradition of the local cuisine.
That Brda become truly internationally known tourist destination, confirm many hotels offering over 500 beds. The local hills are interwoven with numerous internationally connected hiking and cycling trails, which attract many hikers to this beautiful hilly region.
Brda also pay a lot of attention to preserving historical and cultural heritage. The Municipality is proud of the Dobrovo Castle and recently renovated Villa Vipolže that was not only exemplary restored and maintained, but is now also increasingly hosting high-profile cultural and enogastronomic tourist events.
In the development of tourism, the Municipality strictly complied with all the sustainable tourism guides and therefore has received numerous domestic and international awards. At this year’s World Tourism Day, the Municipality of Brda was among the first destinations in Slovenia to be declared a green destination.
