At the grand ceremony awarding the International Hospitality Awards 2017 in Kievon 18 February 2018, Zagreb’s Subspace hostel won first place in the category Best European Hostel. 315 hostels from 21 European countries competed for this prestigious prize, and 101 hostels took part in the finals. The nominated hostels were rated according to the expert opinion of a panel of judges and by guest reviews.
The Subspace hostel in Teslina ulica is a unique hotel, the first and still the only one in Europe in which guests stay in space capsules. Everything in this hostel is sci-fi themed, from the sleep capsules to the toilets and showers made from sewerage pipes, to the walls painted with futuristic motifs by academy-trained painter Tomislav Buntak.
There are very few hostels like this one where guests can secure the privacy of a hotel room for the price of a hostel. The capsules guarantee privacy and security, while the communal spaces guarantee a social buzz. Each capsule has a large monitor which is a smart TV for surfing the web, watching TV and listening to music. Each has heating, ventilation, a safe and its own lighting. If you add to all this the fact that the staff at Subspace are exceptionally friendly it becomes clear why Subspace was voted best hostel in Europe.
