Every four years teachers and researchers get together in a different German-speaking country for the IDTthe world’s largest conference for teachers of German as a foreign or second language. The next event will take place at the University of Vienna from August 2-7, 2021. Around 3,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to attend.

The Austrian Association of German as a Foreign Language/Second Language (ÖdaF) is hosting the worldwide conference of the International German Teacher’s Association (IDV), an organization with 250,000 members in 85 countries worldwide. The event is staged in partnership with local member associations, most recently in Bolzano, Italy in 2013 and Freiburg (Fribourg), Switzerland in 2017. Vienna last hosted the IDT in 1989.

The event features a packed schedule of lectures, podium discussions, talks, more than 50 special interest topics and an exhibition by international publishers and language and cultural institutions in German-speaking countries, with a particular focus on the host region. In addition to networking and comparing notes with their international peers, participants can also attend readings, concerts, performances and film screenings, some of which are open to the general public.
