Ljubljana is not just the Open City, but also the Innovative City offering inventive approaches to learn about the world around us. The House of Experiments provides an example par excellence.

INNOVATIVE CITY

Slovenia’s capital is a home to a very special house. A house that strives to arouse curiosity, stimulate creativity, and impartial critical thinking skills through open communication, exploration, and discovery. Ljubljana, as the Open City that it is, it is also an Innovative City. Meet the House of Experiments.

Having heard, I have forgotten. Having seen, I have remembered. Having made it myself, I know.

Slovenia’s capital is a home to a very special house. A house that strives to arouse curiosity, stimulate creativity, and impartial critical thinking skills through open communication, exploration, and discovery. The house does not only stand on a brick foundation, but also on its core values and principles to empower society by: inspiring the passion for learning; encouraging curiosity, creativity, dialogue, and questioning; accepting the necessity of making mistake; promoting sincerity; and helping and encouraging others so as to achieve common goals. Its vision is to live and participate in a healthy democracy, a society in which the significant majority thinks critically and addresses challenges proactively.

All of the above is perfectly aligned with Ljubljana’s character of the Open City and its nature of an Innovative City. This special house that innovatively promotes open values and, particularly so much more needed, science is called the House of Experiments (Hiša eksperimentov) or also called the Science Centre. As the matter of fact, the House of Experiments, located in Ljubljana’s Old Town, just a few steps from the famous Dragon Bridge, is the first Slovenian hands-on Science Centre.

The House of Experiments (Hiša) is a serious institution for the promotion of education, but in its essence it is charged with entertainment and humour. For all those business guests to Ljubljana who are inquisitive, the Hiša is an ideal place. All the experiments in the Hiša are constructed robustly and to the highest safety standards. The experiments on display astound any visitor and fire their imagination. True, the experiments often seem like magic, but in the Hiša all ‘the magic’ is explained away softly through the logic of science.

It is somehow similar to a museum, but the difference is that the exhibits in the Hiša can get touched; and, as the matter of fact, only then one realizes their true value. By moving, changing, squeezing and playing, the visitor gets to know something new every time. The Hiša is science being shown in an entertaining way where the experiments are pieces of art. It shows that the transition from art to science is smooth, and the Hiša thrives in this transition space.

The first thing when one enters the Hiša, one bumps into experiments. And the Hiša can be visited in two different ways: individually, when one guides oneself through the Hiša and follows the printed guideline besides every experiment. Another option is to visit the Hiša in groups (particularly welcoming for team-building programmes and incentives).

Besides experiments, this ‘magical’ building offers Science Adventure, interactive lectures on specific topics enriched with experiments, or short shows where the leading role is played by science. Some of the titles of the shows: Eggology, Soundology, Gasology, Lightology, All the same-All different, Smalllargeology, Center-of-Gravitology, Presuureology, … The Hiša also offers diverse workshops, shows, discussion groups, etc. Thus, it is a perfect place for business and congress guests when in Ljubljana looking for an innovative side of the Open City.
