MEDIEVAL FORTRESS
The Castle Hochosterwitz was built on a limestone rock that rises 150m above the valley and allows the visitor a spectacular view over the neighbouring mountains, hills and countryside. Characteristic for the 14th and 15th century are the square tower ”Bergfried” which originally controlled the entry into the castle yard and the protecting walls with battlements (Wintperge) when the crossbow was the main weapon.
Named after the flag-wielding mercenaries in the colours “black amber and red and white” (Khevenhüller and the colours), the sparse paint a fresco painting the side of the doorway reveal an artistic hand. The building itself has a special, well-thought-out design.
The Castle Hochosterwitz is the perfect setting for a variety of events such as knight festivals, family celebrations, full moon walks, exhibitions, folk festivals, children’s parties and concerts, along with the Castle restaurant. The restaurant offers typical Carinthian food and the opportunity to celebrate personal events in a unique ambience.
