Lyon, France

Since 2019, Greater Lyon has been part of the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index), a performance improvement programme aimed at making the business tourism and events industry more sustainable. With a score of 55%, Lyon is the leading French city among those listed and has once again demonstrated its commitment to responsible tourism, having been awarded the title of ‘European Capital of Smart Tourism’ by the European Union just one year ago.

Lyon further develops its sustainable tourism strategy

Last year, Lyon was named ‘European Capital of Smart Tourism 2019’ by the European Union. Beyond the recognition of innovations in the area of sustainable tourism, this title has made it possible to further raise awareness of the topic among local partners and continue to develop our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) approach.

This is why Lyon decided to join the GDS-Index in 2019. It is a strong signal that collectively engages ONLYLYON Tourism and Conventions and business tourism professionals in the constant improvement of sustainable development performance. The GDS-Index enables an assessment of the territory, based on the commitment and action of local authorities and tourism service providers (DMOs, hotels, caterers, restaurants, event management agencies, PCOs, etc.).

By joining the Index, Lyon became the leading French city with a score of 55%, ahead of Bordeaux (54%) and Nantes (49%). This result is very encouraging and is in large part due to the achievement of ISO 20121 certification by the Convention Centre and Eurexpo at the end of 2019, as well as ACA 3+ (Airport Carbon Accreditation) certification by Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport, as these are major players in the sector.

What is the GDS-Index?

It is a performance improvement programme aimed at making the business tourism and events industry more sustainable. To do this, the GDS-Index helps destinations develop effective strategies and practices, in order to meet its sustainable development objectives. This approach contributes to the overall quality of life in local areas and naturally enhances the experience of our visitors.

Launched in 2016, the GDS-Index currently includes 54 cities around the world, 3 of which are in France: Lyon, Bordeaux and Nantes.
