LAWRENCE DURELL’S FORMER RESIDENCE

The White House in Kalami is best known as the former residence of British author, Lawrence Durrell. Lawrence lived here in the 1930s with his wife, Nancy. Their Kalami home was regularly visited by his family including, a young Gerald Durrell who later became a leading conservationist and popular author. Your own unique holiday experience can also unfold in this small waterfront village of Kalami, set on the north-east coast of the island of Corfu, surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. In 1978, Kalami Bay was a featured location in the movie ‘The Greek Tycoon’. Starring Anthony Quinn and Jaqueline Bisset, the film is based on Aristotle Onassis and his relationship with Jacqueline Kennedy. Kalami also featured in the 1981 James Bond movie ‘For Your Eyes Only’. The movie starred Roger Moore and was directed by John Glen. More recently, ITV’s hugely popular series “The Durrells”, filmed and screened between 2016 and 2019, has highlighted the beauty of Corfu once again. This is bringing in a new influx of Durrell fans to visit the island, with a visit to Kalami Bay and the White House on the agenda of many.
