The World EXPO is a huge global event that is comparable in size to the Olympics or the World Cup. However, the economic impact of a World EXPO, which can run for a period of up to six months, is far greater than that of the Olympics or the World Cup. Hosting a World EXPO also leads to job creation, allowing the host city to advance in numerous ways. This is why prestigious cities all around the world are always so eager to host the event in their city.

Since 1988, the World Fair has been classified into “registered expos” and “recognized expos”. Registered expos are held every five years under a broad theme, and the host country provides the site while participating countries construct national booths using their own funds. Recognized expos, on the other hand, are held between registered expos, and the host country creates the site and country booths and rents them out to participating countries free of charge. Unlike registered expos, which have no limitations in terms of exhibition area, recognized expos are limited in size to less than 247,500 ㎡.

“Sharing Wisdom for the Next Progress”

The 2030 Busan World EXPO, now being prepared by Busan, will be carried out as a registered expo. While recognized expos have been held in 1993 in Daejeon and in 2012 in Yeosu, if Busan wins the bid and is selected as the event’s official host, it will be South Korea’s first time hosting a registered expo. The event, if held in Busan, will be operated under the theme “Sharing Wisdom for the Next Progress” between May 1 and October 31, 2030. Busan has been preparing for the 2030 Busan World EXPO since 2014 and making sure that the city is well-prepared for the expo is also considered a national project. If Busan is selected as the host of the 2030 World EXPO, the expo is expected to generate KRW 43 trillion in production inducement effects and KRW 18 trillion in added value induction effects, as well as create 500,000 jobs. Please show your interest in and support for Busan as it continues to actively make preparations leading up to 2023 when the official host city of the 2030 World EXPO will be selected.
