Compared to 2019, 52% fewer conference events were organised in Tallinn (1,826 events took place). The number of participants decreased by 65% (85,345 delegates participated).
The conference events taking place in Tallinn were mostly short – 82% of all events lasted for one day. 96% of the events in Tallinn had up to 199 participants. As expected, the number of international events in Tallinn decreased the most – by 82% (175 events). It is worth noting that 82% of all international events in 2020 took place in the first quarter of the year.
Since October 2020, the Tourism Department of the Tallinn Enterprise Services has been using the analysis tool Event Impact Calculator (EIC) of European Cities Marketing (ECM), to which data was entered retrospectively from 2018. International events with at least 100 participants were analysed.
On average, one foreign delegate to the conference brings 800 euros to Tallinn, of which 390 euros is spent on accommodation, entertainment, catering, and shopping. Other expenses are related to the event, including room rental, event catering, support services, etc. The tax revenue related to the hosting of one foreign delegate is about 120 euros.
In 2018 and 2019, there were 164 and 188 international events with more than a hundred participants, respectively. In 2020, however, only 27 such events took place. As a result, the sales revenue of international conferences has decreased by 93% compared to the average of the previous two years.
