Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands will open the brand-new, state-of-the-art MECC Maastricht conference centre on Thursday, 16 September. This is an official and historically symbolic act, considering it was exactly 33 years ago that Princess Margriet opened MECC Maastricht on 23 September 1988. Since then, the venue has been the trusted location for many national and international trade fairs and conferences, solidifying its enormous economic value for the city and region.

Part of a broader investment plan that had already begun several years earlier, the comprehensive upgrade and expansion of the MECC Maastricht conference centre, the beating economic heart of Limburg, started in 2019. This revitalisation was necessary for the location to continue to compete with national and international venues as a conference destination, and to keep meeting the high demands of international conference organisers and participants. The new building was completed this past June and will officially open in September.

The total investment of over €50 million was financed by the Province of Limburg, the Municipality of Maastricht and MECC Maastricht. The upgrade and expansion will lead to more international conferences and events and therefore an even larger spin-off effect for the city and region, with an estimated value of €80 million a year.

Rob van de Wiel, Managing Director of MECC Maastricht: “We are very honoured that Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet will be opening our new conference centre almost 33 years to the day after the opening of MECC Maastricht. The developments in our industry are following each other in rapid succession and revitalisation of our building was very necessary. This beautiful new conference centre will equip us for a successful future and we hope to welcome many national and international guests again in the upcoming decades.”

The conference centre has not only been completely transformed in terms of its looks; its capacity has also grown from 3,000 to 5,000 visitors. The latter is particularly important for Maastricht and the region since conference visitors represent the most appealing form of tourism due to their spending patterns. International attendees participating in a conference each spend an average of 365 Euros per day here.
