HISTORICAL GEM
Stara Sušica Castle is a real historical gem of Gorski kotar. It is situated 800 meters above sea level, in an untouched century-old forest, surrounded by diverse flora and fauna. It is owned by the city of Rijeka and managed by the Youth Center. Stara Sušica Castle provides the services of a children’s resort and hosts children and young people from all over Croatia on various school programs in nature, camps, winter and summer vacations. Moreover, it provides excellent opportunities for hosting events and conferences.
Stara Sušica Castle and Stara Sušica were first mentioned in the 14th century during the Turkish invasion of Europe. The Croatian noble families Frankopani and later Zrinski did everything to protect the Gorski Kotar region from the Turks. Nevertheless, the Turkish troops occupied the areas of Gorski Kotar on three occasions (1525, 1578 1585). The villages of Stara Sušica and Ravna Gora were destroyed on July 22, 1786.
