The renowned British magazine Time Out, established in 1968 and currently distributed in more than 50 countries worldwide, compiled its annual ranking of the world’s best cities, in which Prague took seventh place this year.
Over the past 18 months, 27,000 city-dwellers, the magazine’s editor, and other experts evaluated the destinations based on a set of various criteria. Those usually include culture, food, and social life, but this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that strongly affected these criteria, new aspects were added, such as how the cities have been able to adapt to the current situation, what are the changes in the local community projects, or how the destinations deal with sustainability.
San Francisco ranked top this year thanks to its progressive politics and community initiatives. The second spot was taken by Amsterdam with its sustainable approach and third place went to Manchester especially thanks to its friendliness, resilience, and nightlife.
Prague ranked seventh thanks to the fact that most of the interviewed praised the city’s beauty despite the lockdowns (82 %) and walkable distances with no need to use car (89 %). The Czech capital has been also ranked second when it came to opportunities to relax. This all makes Prague one of the world’s most liveable cities. Besides, the magazine highlighted the green areas of Prague, especially Prague 6 district, whose parks can be used all year round for summer picnics or winter sledging.
European cities are very-well ranked in the list in general. Except the already mentioned destinations (Amsterdam, Manchester, and Prague), Copenhagen and Porto are also ranked high, which means that 50% of the TOP 10 destinations consist of the Old Continent’s cities.
