RENOVATED FORMER SUGAR FACTORY

The renovated former sugar factory Cukrarna – a new space for the production and presentation of contemporary art – has opened its doors to the public.

One of the most monumental examples of industrial architecture in Ljubljana, a source of inspiration for four modernists, a contemporary exhibition space, as well as an urban curiosity that invites visitors to walk along the Ljubljanica River to the eastern edge of the city centre – all this is Cukrarna.

Contribution to the revitalisation of urban space

The extensive reconstruction of the Cukrarna building, which started in 2018 within the framework of the Cukrarna Gallery Construction Project, was financed together with the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Slovenia.

The project was implemented within the framework of the mechanism of integrated territorial investments, which are aimed at eliminating degradation and revitalization of urban space, and the allocated EU funds in the amount of 13.5 million euros have already been fully exhausted. With the reconstruction of the existing building and the design of the surrounding area, the urban environment was improved while and the wider city centre was further revitalized.

The renovated Cukrarna and the opening exhibition titled The Wonderfulness of Memory can be viewed free of charge by fans of culture and fine architecture on open days every first weekend of the month until the end of the year.
