Market-Ready Workforce with International Skills Certification

Building on its commitment to advance the professional development of its workforce, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) recently celebrated with 17 team members from its culinary and food and beverage department, who successfully graduated and obtained the world-class City & Guilds ‘Competent Food & Beverage Professional in Business Events Industry’ skills certification.

In line with its continued effort to be on par with the global standards of hospitality and business events industries, the Centre is the first and only venue in Malaysia to have engaged with City & Guilds (C&G), a global leader in skills development and certification, to provide accredited in-house training programmes, conducted by internal subject-matter-experts.

The Centre’s General Manager

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Alan Pryor, the Centre’s General Manager, said, “My congratulations to all the graduates in successfully completing the training programme amidst a challenging time. Our people are our biggest and most valuable asset and to invest in our team members is to invest in the Centre’s future growth and continued success as Malaysia’s world-class purpose-built venue. This cross-exposure training programme will not only assist our team members in their own professional journey, but will also streamline our internal processes, enhancing the efficiency, standards, and service delivery of our food and beverage offerings. Ultimately, ensuring a smooth and seamless journey for our customers and visitors.”

The year-long accredited training programme provided the team members with cross-departmental exposure and practical coaching in food and beverage management and operations, involving food safety and hygiene, food waste management, banqueting skills, and fundamentals of beverage and gastronomy.

The Centre’s Director of Human Resources, Muhammad Vickneswaran added, “We are committed to recognising the talent within our organisation and helping them achieve their potential. The globally recognised C&G certification is an advantage to our team members’ career growth within the Centre and their future employability. Our team members have shown great resilience and agility in these tumultuous times, but this is not the end of the journey, only the beginning. As the marketplace becomes more active, our team members will find these newly acquired skills and knowledge highly relevant and beneficial to meet the current demand and to fully perform their job functions.”

This training programme supports the Centre in further developing the food and beverage component of its services into a stand-alone product offering. The culinary, catering, beverage and stewarding departments work hand-in-hand to deliver consistent and masterful culinary services to an event. With the renewed insight of processes, challenges and intricacies within other departments and being armed with the right competence and knowledge, the Centre’s team members are well-equipped to perform tasks beyond their day-to-day role and provide cross-departmental operational support and assistance where needed, to guarantee delegates and guests have an enjoyable and memorable dining experience.

As Malaysia’s premier venue, the Centre endeavours to raise the bar of excellence to ensure the quality and standards of Malaysia’s business events delivery matches international industry requirements. In line with this, the Centre will continue to focus on empowering its team, as well as Malaysia’s industry supply chain, with more professional development initiatives in the pipeline.
