NEED TO KNOW 2022

The City of Helsinki is proud to mark the 10th anniversary of its designation as the World Design Capital, with a series of cultural venue launches, architecture projects and flagship events taking place throughout 2022.

The genesis of Little Finlandia (‘Pikku-Finlandia’) originated at Aalto University as a student architectural competition, which invited ideas for a temporary event and meeting pavilion with cafes and terraces overlooking the water while renovations to Finlandia Hall take place. Torvinen’s design is influenced by Finnish boreal forests, with the periphery of the rectangular wooden building flanked by colonnades of trees. Designed as a circular building, once Finlandia Hall renovations are complete, Little Finlandia is intended to be dismantled for a new life elsewhere in the city.

BEST INCENTIVE IDEA

Midnight sun island hopping

You will use various transport from fast rib boats to traditional wooden schooners. Enjoy a meal on a small remote island by the open sea.

BEST KEPT SECRETS

Saunas are a big part of Finnish culture and a nice way to unwind. What would be more wonderful than laying on a sauna bench, enjoying the hot steams and listening to the sounds of the burning wood on the stove? Finland’s sauna culture is part of the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Some examples are:

*Lonna pays homage to the traditional sauna culture. Take a waterbus Lonna and the peace in 7 mins. There are saunas for both men and women which are heated up with wood-burning stoves. You can experience the calm and almost sacred feeling of the traditional Finnish sauna.

*Kulttuurisauna is architect Tuomas Toivonen’s ecological design sauna in the shadow of the sculptural Merihaka district. Open all year round, ice swimming possibility in wintertime.

*Löyly is a design sauna consisting of a traditional Finnish smoke sauna and two other wood-heated saunas, a year-round terrace and a restaurant. The saunas offer direct access to the outdoor seating area and the sea, where it is possible to enjoy a refreshing swim, all year round.
