NEED TO KNOW 2022

2022 will be such a tremendously eventful year for Tallinn. The city will host over 90 different high-level sports events. Tallinn is the UNESCO City of Music 2022, and a four-year strategy has been prepared with a very wide spectre. Tallinn will host several international conference events such as the European Design Festival 2022, Latitude59, and ISPCAN 2022 Congress. The food scenery has climbed to the next level as Estonia has recently received its first Michelin star restaurants. Tallinn is also celebrating the birthdays of several landmarks such as Raeapteek (celebrating its 600th anniversary), Tallinn Town Hall (celebrating its 700th birthday) and one of the first skyrise buildings, Original Sokos Hotel Viru, which turns 50 this year.

BEST INCENTIVE IDEA

Definitely one of the coolest ideas is the Iglupark – it’s a really exciting concept of being able to dip into the Baltic Sea after being in a hot sauna. No one is left nonchalant about such an experience. The CSR part of events is gaining focus and Tallinn offers the unique possibility to work at the Tallinn Zoo. Or you could venture out to the bay of Tallinn for a kayaking tour or even better, learn something new during sea rescue training with an actual practical diving-into-the-sea part.

BEST KEPT SECRETS

Tallinn remains one of the most compact cities in Europe. There are not many cities where you can see such a variety of different eras side by side. The ability to modernise the city while also keeping the authenticity of its varied history is something to marvel at. In recent years, Tallinn has finally really opened up and become the accessible seaside capital that it is. Visitors can really walk on the seafront and enjoy different activities while doing so. This is something so new that even the locals are still getting used to it as the seafront used to be closed up for so many years. The up-and-coming Noblessner area is one of the best examples, but there are new developments everywhere. You can visit the soon-to-be-renovated Patarei sea fortress and there is a residential area developed on the Kopli peninsula. The Tallinn Cruise Terminal building is a welcomed addition, which has fast become one of the most popular event spaces in the city.

PERFECT GIFT

The best gift must be the promise to visit Tallinn again and again! As the future green capital of Europe, the city emphasises that they do not promote overconsuming and buying things just for the sake of having them. Try your hand in zero waste cooking class or go and use the leather industry scraps to make your own accessories. Or if you do wish to buy something, make sure that you need it and first try finding something second-hand from one of the city’s many charity shops. If that doesn’t work out, visitors can find something locally crafted and maybe even edible. Just try to steer clear of Baltic amber and the matryoshka doll, as they should be purchased from your travels to their countries of origin.
