The jubilee 70th Ljubljana Festival
This year marks the jubilee 70th Ljubljana Festival. Until the start of September, several more cultural events will take place in Cankarjev dom, Križanke Summer Theater and other venues, thus enriching the happenings in the capital.
Below we are listing highlights of the Ljubljana Festival until 8 September, when it will culminate in a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic.
July: from John Malkovich to Carmen
In Cankarjev dom, on 18 July, John Malkovich will present the attitude of music critics in a musical theatre performance. On 19 July, under the helm of conductor Riccardo Muti, the works of three composers from the Romantic era will be performed by the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra. Bizet’s famous opera Carmen will be on view on 21 July, performed by the opera ensemble of SNG Maribor under the conductor Simon Krečič.
July’s events will conclude on 27 July at the Križanke Summer Theatre by Marko Hatlak and the band FUNtango, who will mark the 100th anniversary of Astor Piazzolla, one of the most famous musicians of the 20th century.
August: from chamber music to operatic highlights
The beginning of August will be marked by a cycle of performances by top chamber ensembles. On 7 August, Cankarjev dom will host a cycle of symphonic poems by the composer Smetana. Later in August, the Thai Philharmonic Orchestra will perform together with violinist Kristóf Baráti. Križanke Summer Theatre will host a concert performance of film music: initially for the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, and then selected excerpts from the Harry Potter films.
At the end of August, Cankarjev dom offers evenings for opera connoisseurs with tenor Juan Diego Flóreza (22 August), opera diva Anna Netrebko and her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov (26 August), and baritone Plácido Domingo (31 August).
September: the grand finale of the festival
This year’s Ljubljana Festival will conclude in the first days of September with Viennese classicism performed by the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Vlado Kreslin and Laibach in the Križanke Summer Theater. The event will culminate with a performance by the Vienna Philharmonic.
