NEW SEASON ANNOUNCED AT CANKARJEV DOM

Kongres Magazine attended the traditional press conference held by Cankarjev dom, where the esteemed venue announced novelties and programs for the upcoming six months.

Cankarjev dom combines a rich cultural, art and congress program. Eight directors in the field of music, film, exhibitions and congress programmes presented the eventful program for the 2022/2023 season.

Cankarjev dom has always been in the midst of change as a modern venue. That is also true for the latest exhibition this season, which carries the title: In the vortex of change. Opening its doors on 15 November, the exhibition will be co-created with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. For the premier time, the central exhibition will focus on natural sciences. It will shine a light on the extraordinary and inspiring life on our planet whilst raising awareness regarding climate change. Visitors will get acquainted with ways our society can change our attitude toward nature to protect its incredible diversity.

Cankarjev dom continues to perpetually advocate urban beekeeping and maintain bee life on their rooftop. In cooperation with Ljubljana Botanic Garden, they prepared a special gift for attendees of the press conference – a clay pot with seeds to grow domestic Slovenian plants that bees will flock to in the summer. Ljubljana Botanic Garden took a sustainable step further and made the seed packaging from the non-invasive plant Asian knotweed (Reynoutria japonica).

“Content prepared by Cankarjev dom confronts visitors with various experiences that help them tackle change in their lives.”

“We are living in times when we feel like tightrope walkers. People are not fond of change. The more there are changes, the less there is safety. Content prepared by Cankarjev dom confronts visitors with various experiences that help them tackle change in their lives by giving them more internal harmony and a broader outlook,” explained Uršula Cetinski, Director General of Cankarjev dom.

When designing the program, other segments, including film, humanism programs and photo exhibitions, were entwined with the topic of the central exhibition. In addition, conferences held this autumn in Cankarjev dom will address environmental and social challenges. One of them is the International Battery Association Conference – IBA 2022, where attendees will discuss the future of researching battery material. The philosophical conference titled Master will host distinguished European philosophers who will discuss the phenomenon of power throughout history and in the present. During the press conference, Cankarjev dom hosted EFTA 2022, the conference of the European Family Therapy Association.

Breda Pečovnik, Congress and Commercial Programme Director, discussed the venue’s sustainable aspirations when organising congresses. As members of the international association IAPCO, they follow a strategy set by the UN. One of their first acclaimed measures was: no plastic bottles and cups. Instead, the venue makes use of Ljubljana’s exceptional advantage – safe and clean tap water. During breaks, international conference attendees can enjoy tap water. Thus, in 2019 alone, the disposal of half-litre plastic bottles was reduced by 35,000 units.

Karmen Klučar, the technical director, presented the latest investments, which include a new hall, also known as the 7th stage. The smaller hall will capacitate up to 60 attendees, featuring plenty of daylight. Staying true to its sustainable pledges, the venue used wood and recycled materials to construct the newest hall.
