New urban meeting place in Maribor

At the beginning of November, the Minorite Cultural Quarter opened in Maribor. The extensive renovation of the medieval settlement centre next to the Minorite monastery in Maribor took 20 years. From now on, the venue will function as an urban meeting place with content that will foster creativity and curiosity.

The complex is unique at a national level, as it sits in a former sacral building. The cultural quarter architecturally consists of the Minorite Monastery, the Church, the Auditorium and the Judgement Tower. In terms of content, the venue connects events with a broader cultural character: performances, music and film content, creative collaborations, talks and exhibitions.

The space will also be intriguing for event organisers seeking a special venue with added content. From now on, the Minorite Cultural Quarter, together with the Maribor Puppet Theater, will be established as its own venue for contemporary art, which presents different languages of artistic creation in fresh ways. Above all, modern scenic practices are looking for new, different spaces, and the complex of the cultural quarter offers a unique starting point for them.

The Minorite venue is not only a place but a unique entity in which events intertwine.

The Minorite venue in Maribor represents a discovery hub for the city’s largest festivals, including the Lent Festival, Stoptrik, Dokudoc, Enimation, and Platforma.

The Judgement Tower is a medieval defensive tower that once fortified the southwestern corner of the city walls and dates back to the beginning of the 14th century. Its exterior and interior changed several times, but it acquired its current image after the Second World War. With the last renovation in 2021, two venues were established: on the ground floor and on the first floor.

The Minorite Monastery was built in the 13th century and is the only monastery in the city that dates back to the Middle Ages. Until 2007, the building had deteriorated, when a comprehensive renovation finally began. Since 2010, the Minorite Monastery has been the domicile of the Maribor Puppet Theatre. The building includes the Great Hall, the Small Hall and the Auditorium. The latter has become a sought-after summer theatre.
