International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), managed by ASM Global, hosted its annual Careers Insights event on Thursday 20 April, where students from the University of Technology Sydney’s (UTS) event management school heard about the many career paths available not only at ICC Sydney but in the business events industry at large.

Geoff Donaghy, CEO of ICC Sydney and Group Director – Convention Centres, ASM Global (APAC), considers such insight and training opportunities vital to ensuring the industry’s sustained growth and success.

“At ICC Sydney, we are dedicated to future-proofing our world-class venue and services by investing in the next generation of event professionals. Programs like the Careers Insights event delivered for UTS students are a key part of this strategy.”

“By nurturing emerging talent from all backgrounds, we’re ensuring our industry stays innovative and relevant in a rapidly changing world. We believe in empowering the next generation to build fulfilling careers that contribute to the progress and sustainability of our industry,” Mr Donaghy said.

ICC Sydney’s Careers Insights event was designed to offer the students attending an opportunity to gain access to industry leaders and professionals, including ICC Sydney’s Director of Events Services, Malu Barrios, Director of Culinary Services, Lynell Peck and Director of Human Resources, Luke Fleming who led the presentation.

Mr Fleming said of the Careers Insights event, “Just as ICC Sydney is more than a venue, we also provide more than just jobs, creating pathways for long-term careers. As part of our commitment to fostering new talent, it was fantastic to have this year’s UTS event management undergraduate students join us to hear about the avenues open to them, to learn new skills and help pave their way into the dynamic business events industry. We can’t wait to see the pathways they’ll take.”

The students also heard from UTS alumni about their experiences of building careers at ICC Sydney, as well as other opportunities to consider within the wider events and hospitality industry. These include careers in business development, communications, event services, culinary services, audio-visual services, information technology, human resources, finance and administration, amongst others.

“Working at ICC Sydney helps me develop my skills and learn so much about the events industry in a diverse and vibrant organisation.”

University of Technology Sydney alumnus and ICC Sydney team member, Skye Martin said, “While completing my undergraduate event management degree at UTS, I learnt about the many career opportunities that ICC Sydney has to offer and this sparked my interest. I’m excited to have progressed my career here, starting as a casual usher, then receptionist and I have recently advanced into the Business Development Coordinator role. Working at ICC Sydney helps me develop my skills and learn so much about the events industry in a diverse and vibrant organisation and I can’t wait to see what my future entails.”

The Career Insights event is one of many professional development opportunities offered by ICC Sydney to equip young people with the knowledge and experience needed to develop a successful career in the events industry. This includes the AV Graduate Program, as well as the paid and certified Professional Growth Traineeship Program, which have both been effective in recruiting emerging talent and providing opportunities to thrive and grow in the industry with many graduates being retained for casual and permanent roles at the venue.

As an employer of choice, ICC Sydney has earned a strong reputation for fostering career opportunities through their award-winning training and development programs. In FY22 alone, ICC Sydney employed 14 new trainees, engaged in over 2,147 internal and external training courses and invested in 3,441 training hours for its diverse in-house team of events professionals.

Looking ahead, ICC Sydney will host the UTS Startups Summit in June, which seeks to inspire Year 9 and 10 high school students to immerse themselves in the technology sector and discover future career pathways. The long-standing partnership between UTS and ICC Sydney sees reciprocal support in career engagement and has enabled, and encouraged several UTS alumni to begin their career pathways at ICC Sydney.
