As Conventa Best Event Award 2023 is nearing, Kongres Magazine talked to esteemed jury members, who shared their tips for winning the coveted award. Maarten Schram discussed what he looks for when judging the best events.

Q1: What do you look for when you evaluate the best events?

I am always looking for the ‘magic‘. I love the beauty of creativity, how the challenge/targets are translated to a concept, and the execution. Of course, the effectiveness plays another important role. My jury perspective is always ‘What signal do I send to the industry by rewarding this case?

Q2: What advice would you give to agencies and brands thinking about what event to put forward for Conventa Best Event Award?

First of all, go for it! Secondly, look for an outstanding event that is special and adds something special to the events we all see often. It could be big and impressive. But could also be small and special. Look for the special touch within a project. Could be very creative, very effective, or both. Or could be very inspiring on a current topic like sustainability.

Q3: What tips would you give to agencies and brands putting together case studies for their events?

Always think already about awards the moment a project comes into your agency. Ask yourself the question, could this be an award-winning case? If yes, look at the process from that angle. Start preparing/thinking about visuals, video content, story etc. It’s possible to prepare already during the project itself. Secondly, give it all the attention you can give. The story, the video, the visuals etc. It should add up, from start to end in a logical flow and a perfect impression of the event. And of course, for the possible live presentation, prepare well and add something special to the online/written presentation. Important! 

Q4: What kind of results and ROI metrics impress you in a case study, and which ones disappoint?

Important is to mention the goals upfront. What was the starting point? And what were the results according to these starting points? Communication facts and figures are often used, media reach could be interesting; however, likes and shares don’t say that much. The most interesting question is: what was changed by the event, what was transformed? What of whom was set in motion? How was this measured?
