When summer comes to an end, the season of conferences and trade fairs begins in Berlin. In 2023, the capital will once again host numerous important events with visitors from all over the world. Researchers and business representatives from fields such as medicine, biotechnology and IT hold some of their most important industry meetings in the capital.
Health and medicine
One of the world’s most important conferences on global health issues is the World Health Summit from 15 to 17 October. It was founded in Berlin in 2009 and has since developed into a true success story. The motto of the 15th edition is ‘A defining year for global health action’. Among other things, it deals with the future handling of pandemics and the corresponding lessons that can be learned from COVID-19. More than 4,000 participants from over 100 countries are expected at the JW Marriott Hotel. Another 50,000+ will follow the conference online.
Other important events from the medical field are, for example, the joint professional event on implantology of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für orale Implantologie (DGI) (German society of oral implantology) from 28 to 30 September at CityCube Berlin, the conference of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) from 11 to 14 October and the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (DKOU), which is to be held just a few days later, from 24 to 27 October. About four weeks later, this will be followed by the conference of the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics (DGPPN), which will take place from 29 November to 2 December. Around 9,000 participants have registered for Europe’s largest convention on mental health at CityCube Berlin. This includes experts from the medical field, as well as people affected and their relatives.
Science and research
A highlight from the world of science is the 8th Berlin Science Week from 1 to 10 November. It is more of a festival than a conference, and this year’s motto is ‘Dare to know: Our narratives, our future’. It brings together over 500 speakers, more than 150 organisations and over 20,000 visitors to exchange views on the current challenges facing science and society. The spectrum of topics ranges from AI and economics to urban planning and the future development of democratic societies. The central venue is the Berlin Science Week Campus at the Museum für Naturkunde. Many programme points are also conducted in a hybrid manner or completely online. The ‘Art & Science Forum’ is a new feature this year. Visitors will also find unusual formats such as science slams and comedy shows there. And the big closing party will also take place there.
Another one of this year’s highlights is the 14th European Congress of Chemical Engineering, which will take place between 17 and 21 September in conjunction with the 7th European Congress of Applied Biotechnology. Experts from industry, research and teaching come together here and exchange ideas on innovative and sustainable solutions in a wide range of areas. For example, this group includes food, mobility, energy, health and well-being.
IT and digital
There are also several interesting events in the field of electronics and IT in Berlin this autumn. At the Best of Blockchain event that will take place from 5 to 7 October, experts will discuss how blockchain technology will change different areas such as financial services, the metaverse or even Web 3.0, the next-generation internet. On 18 and 19 October, about 5000 participants are expected to attend the Seamless Europe event at Messegelände Berlin. The two-day conference with over 400 speakers will cover topics related to e-commerce, FinTech and electronic payment methods. At the same time, more than 350 companies will present their products and solutions. This has turned Seamless Europe into an industry event that is garnering attention from across the entire world.
The IFA Consumer Electronics Show from 1 to 5 September has a 99-year tradition and is the world’s largest trade fair for consumer and household electronics. After a break due to the coronavirus, IFA 2022 made a convincing comeback with more than 160,000 visitors. In addition to the wide range of the latest products for interested end customers, the International Conference on Consumer Technology will also take place at IFA. Experts from the domains of science and research meet there to exchange ideas on topics such as the Internet of Things, machine learning and artificial intelligence. This year’s IFA is scheduled to host the very first appearance of the Sustainability Village. The goal here is a dialogue between decision-makers from the electronics industry and experts and companies from the sustainability sector.
