With its diversity of possibilities, Gabriel Loci – formerly St. Gabriel’s Monastery – is completely different from standard spaces designed for events. Over the last 3 years, it has become a centre of culture and arts in Prague.
The generous surface area of 16,000 m2 can actually cover any type of usage. Events hosted here range from festivals, live music, theatre performances and workshops to corporate parties and weddings. About 30 budding artists have settled in the complex to build their studios. Due to its diversity, the site is also highly preferred by film producers.
The former St. Gabriel’s Monastery offers grand rooms sought after for their unique design. In addition to the much-favoured Garden of Eden, the Library with its genuine furniture and rooms such as the Chandelier Hall or the Column Hall, all certainly add to the unique spirit of the special space. The Column Hall – a place where the nuns confessed their sins – is particularly impressive with its columns and arches. There are also mysterious rooms such as the crypt, the vault room and the room where post-mortem exams were conducted.
Colourful summer stage
During the spring and summer seasons, the summer stage is available for theatre performances and summer cinema screenings; there is also a summer bar open every day in the garden, offering a pleasant atmosphere in the neighbourhood of the Kinský Garden.
Visitors can also take a look inside the former monastery and listen to the history during regular guided tours provided by Monica Bubna-Litic, a direct relative of Countess Gabriela, the patroness of the monastery.
St. Gabriel’s Monastery is a distinctive cultural monument built in the Neo-Romanesque style at the end of the 19th century and is considered the oldest and most remarkable example of Beuron Art School in the world. Visitors can soak up the cinematic atmosphere and take a peek behind the scenes of the filming of global blockbusters in the intricate and spectacular spaces that played a starring role in the Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front and even hosted several gripping scenes from Marvel’s Falcon and Winter Soldier. Extraction 2 featuring Chris Hemsworth was one of the most recent motion pictures of such kind.
