Q1: We are now in the first half of 2023. How would you assess it?
The previous spring program schedule at Cankarjev dom was a resounding success in every aspect. We achieved our set goals both in terms of the professional and financial aspects of our congress program. Cankarjev dom typically hosts around twenty well-defined congresses each year, with only a few exceptions, and this half-year was no different.
Q2: What are the new developments in Ljubljana that have had a positive impact on the work of your congress centre? And what else would you like to see in the city to make it more appealing to foreign congress organisers?
Ljubljana always offers us interesting novelties and attractions for all visitors, whether they be congress participants or tourists. We are proud of the city’s team that has turned Ljubljana into a European capital and earned it awards and recognition. The city provides ample accommodations, leisure activities, cultural heritage with cultural events, exquisite cuisine, and a lively social scene along the Ljubljanica River. However, Ljubljana could benefit from additional venues capable of hosting larger gatherings (up to 2000 people) for seated dinners, lunches, and immersive cultural or entertainment programs.
Q3: What about new developments at Cankarjev dom? What would you highlight?
We have built a new hall on the 6th floor of Cankarjev dom with natural daylight that can accommodate 100 guests. It’s fully equipped and constructed in line with sustainable principles, using biodegradable materials and energy-efficient technologies to contribute to the preservation of our planet. We named it after the Slovenian poet, writer, and world traveller Alma Karlin. One of our clients even described it as “fresh and charming as a woman.”
Q4: Which congress or event in the first half of this year left the strongest impression on you, and why?
Every event hosted by us leaves a unique mark. The financial aspect of each congress, both in the immediate and broader sense, is important, as it contributes to the development of business tourism and the education and broadening of horizons for participants. Notable mentions from this period include the EWCPS with 700 attendees, EENA with 800, EACD with 800, and ECTES with 700 participants. These were the largest congresses in Ljubljana during this time. However, every event, even if smaller, brings something special, freshness, and novelty to the field.
Q5: We believe you face challenges as well. What are the biggest ones, and how do you address them?
If you’re referring to challenges as difficulties, there are plenty in our line of work. The most significant challenge that affects everyone in the meetings industry is Ljubljana’s air connectivity. It causes us to lose congresses, and international associations often choose other destinations for this reason. Action needs to be taken in the realm of mobility, primarily within the political structures, to address this issue.
For us, the rule is that every event is welcome, and we always execute them professionally despite the “challenges.” With over 40 years of tradition and a professionally trained team, we ensure high-quality organisation, marketing, and execution of congresses in our own and other venues in Slovenia and around the world.
Q6: What are the forecasts for the second half of 2023 and the upcoming year?
Securing a congress for Slovenia, Ljubljana, and Cankarjev dom is a process that can take up to a decade. During this time, we build relationships with our clients, and trust evolves into friendship. These events leave a mark on society as well. The congress program has been marked by scientific congresses, which make a significant contribution to the respective fields of science and promote the recognition of Slovenia and Ljubljana. Our congresses for the next year are already planned within the set goals.
Q7: Have there been any changes in demand post-COVID? Are hybrid events still relevant?
The post-COVID period has brought back in-person events with all the knowledge that comes with organising congresses. While hybrid events are relatively rare, some clients still inquire about them. We’ve gained valuable knowledge and skills in utilising modern remote technologies during this period.
Q8: How will you spend this summer?
I spent this summer in an extremely busy manner. As the Governor of the Lions Clubs of Slovenia, we have been actively involved in flood relief efforts from the very beginning, helping people affected by natural disasters caused by water. We provided financial aid, material support, and even physical assistance to those who needed it. I’ve been embracing the sunshine while working passionately on all fronts.
Q9: Which event will mark the beginning of the second part of the season at Cankarjev dom?
We started the congress season with Conventa Crossover – the festival of events for creative minds. We now continue with the Innovative Lighting Technologies CIE congress and the SINAPSA neuroscience conference, as well as trade fairs and concerts, and much more. In September, the doors and stages will be open for all forms of art in the Cultural and Artistic Program of Cankarjev dom.
