NEW OUTDOOR AUDITORIUM FOR CULTURAL EVENTS
Almost a hundred years since the preeminent Slovenian architect, the world-famous Jože Plečnik, designed a unique neoclassical auditorium in Ljubljana’s Tivoli Park, the landmark has undergone a well-deserved revamp. The architect envisioned the venue as a summer theatre with an accompanying auditorium in a Neo-Grec style.
Coinciding with the 35th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts, the renovated Plečnik Auditorium in Tivoli Park was officially inaugurated in September. Set behind the Tivoli Castle at the edge of the forest, the venue, now under the management of the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC), includes wooden stands and a stage with a view of the city. The outdoor venue will cater to cultural events in Ljubljana’s green oasis – Tivoli Park. It can host up to 150 participants.
Renovated summer theatre surrounded by greenery
The renovation was envisioned by Asst. Prof. Rok Žnidaršič and the team from the architectural bureau Medprostor d.o.o. The remains of the old summer theatre with an auditorium were designed in 1933.
According to the architect Žnidaršič, the project is a minimalistic intervention and a reinterpretation of the original design in the original place. The project pays homage to Plečnik’s concern for creating a public open space.
Plečnik’s works across Ljubljana have gained world acclaim after being recognised by UNESCO and placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
