The City of Athens supported the bid through the This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau, joining the Sector of Archaeology and History of Art, Department of History and Archaeology, School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The official announcement was made on September 1st during the EAA Annual Meeting 2023 that took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The EAA Annual Meeting 2026 is expected to welcome 3-4,000 archaeologists from all over the world with the mission to promote collaboration and development in archaeological research, scientific ethics, public awareness, and the protection of cultural heritage.

It will be a significant opportunity to connect distinguished international scientists and academics with the local community of archaeologists.
