Bratislava’s Old Market Hall, a beloved food market-cum-shop and urban gateway to local flavours and artisan products, will host the annual Christmas Market. The event will take place from 17 to 22 December 2023, intertwining local art, books and goodies. Visitors can support local providers, brands, publishers, and artisan food producers by purchasing their products at the Christmas Market.

The list of vendors at the market is growing longer, and numerous original local producers, artisans, booksellers, and local food vendors are set to present their products. The main partner of the Christmas Market Hall 2023 project is Slovenská sporiteľňa, which will bring the innovative GoodPay service to the Christmas Market Hall.

The venue of the event, the Old Market Hall, is becoming sustainable. Since 2013, when the first urban food market was held in the Old Market Hall, the venue has advanced its sustainable endeavours. Now, the venue aspires to become self-sufficient, with an innovative green roof and composting station.

A brand new green roof

Among the newest green projects implemented within the building is a sustainable green roof. Since the original roof of the building required reconstruction, the venue decided to examine sustainable possibilities and best-case practices from around the world and prepare the reconstruction to foster self-sufficiency. The main advantages of green roofs include reduced risk of an urban heat island, retention of rainwater, natural dust filtration and support of urban biodiversity.

The venue’s green roof will increase the quality of life in Bratislava while helping the city adapt to climate change. More importantly, the local community participated in the project. The venue considered their thoughts and opinions and decided that the green roof would double as an urban farm community garden and a rooftop park with facilities for outdoor events.

Sustainable food market

Over ten years, 444 food markets were held in the Old Market, connecting more than two hundred sellers. It is a place where locals and tourists alike can shop, meet friends and discover new tastes and smells.

Composting station

During the food markets, the venue can produce up to 100 kg of biodegradable waste in one day. As the venue strives to be more ecological, they purchased an industrial electric composter at the beginning of 2021, which can transform this waste into valuable compost that can be used again in the ecosystem.

For the Old Market Hall, having its own composter means reducing the volume of municipal waste by up to 80%. The venue is now one step closer to zero waste and contributes to a greener Bratislava.
