Tallinn ranked 17th out of 195 cities in the world in the Numbeo Quality of Life Index 2024. The category assesses a range of factors affecting the quality of life, including purchasing power, pollution, housing affordability, cost of living, safety and climate conditions.
According to the Deputy Mayor of Tallinn Joosep Vimm, Tallinn’s achievement in the Quality of Life Index category is worth noting. “It shows our commitment to ensuring a safe and high-quality living environment,” he said. “We are proud that our activities support the safety and quality of healthcare. We must continue to work for the further development of the capital to make Tallinn an even better place to live, work and visit.”
Tallinn stands out in the ranking for safety, quality of healthcare and housing affordability, which are significantly higher than in many other European cities in the Numbeo index. Tallinn also stands out positively in terms of urban pollution levels, which are much lower than in other cities of similar size.
Tallinn is ahead of several nearby cities such as Berlin (44th), Stockholm (42nd) and Oslo (20th). The top three in the ranking were The Hague (Netherlands), Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Luxembourg (Luxembourg). Among the cities close to Tallinn, Helsinki came 7th, Copenhagen 10th, Vilnius 36th and Riga 88th.
Using a crowdsourcing approach, with the help of volunteers, data on housing costs, perceived levels of crime, quality of healthcare, quality of transport and other key quality of life indicators are collected and analysed. The database thus provides a real-time overview of living conditions in different cities.
Numbeo is the world’s largest database on the cost and quality of living and has been collecting data for over 15 years.
