When it comes to iconic dog breeds, the Dalmatian dog is often up there, but few realise this breed has roots in Croatia. Enter Home of the Dalmatian Dog, the world’s first museum dedicated entirely to this beloved breed, nestled in Šibenik’s historic core. Thanks to a holistic transformation of a former 240 m² hostel, the iconic black‑and‑white spots have taken over, delighting locals and tourists alike.

Conceptualised by Igor Mladinović of creative agency HEARTH thinking&doing, the mastermind behind the Museum of the Tie and La Štruk in Zagreb, the museum reflects years of dreaming and two years of work. The goal, as Mladinović states, is to make the Dalmatian dog unmistakably associated with Croatia, brand Dalmatia through its spotted namesake, and gift visitors memories that are as educational as they are charming.

Spotlight meets tradition

Inside, the museum dazzles with interactive exhibits on the breed’s origins, its roles alongside humans, and its place in pop culture, including in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians. Real-life Dalmatian dogs Dalma and Tino roam the space, adding Instagrammability to the unique museum.

Over 100 plush Dalmatian souvenirs were handcrafted by the Zagreb-based URIHO, a rehabilitation and employment initiative for people with disabilities, using eco‑friendly materials and Croatian ingenuity.

Why Šibenik?

Šibenik’s focus on family- and culture-oriented tourism, and its centuries-old canine traditions, like the 16th-century “Amor di cani” water bowl, made the city the perfect choice for the novel museum.
