The internationally renowned hotel group Kempinski, which has managed the historic Palace Hotel in Portorož since 2008, has announced it will no longer operate in Slovenia once the summer season starts in 2026. The hotel now looks ahead to a new luxury brand to assume management of one of Slovenia’s most prestigious hospitality icons.

Kempinski’s decision to leave the Slovenian market was communicated recently by the hotel’s owners, Serbian hospitality group MK Group. Following the termination of the management agreement, the Palace Hotel is expected to operate independently for a transitional period before being relaunched under a new five-star international chain.

Since its restoration and reopening in 2008 after nearly two decades of decline, Palace Hotel Portorož has been managed by Kempinski, bringing international prestige and recognition to the Slovenian Adriatic destination. The property has long been regarded as one of the country’s premier luxury hotels and was the only one classified as five-star superior in recent years.

Who will take over the management of Slovenia’s flagship luxury hotel?

Two major brands are supposedly in talks to take over the management of the hotel. The Palace Hotel is expected to operate independently for the next year, before entering the 2027 season under the Minor Hotels group. The company is primarily active in Asian and Middle Eastern markets and has recently begun expanding its presence in Europe. Anantara, a Thai luxury hotel brand, is also said to be in negotiations.

Hotel representatives say the identity of the incoming hotel brand will be revealed when the property reopens under its new banner. They assert that the refreshed offering will further strengthen Slovenia’s position among leading European tourist destinations by aligning with global hospitality trends.

Local tourism officials expressed optimism that the transition will maintain the hotel’s high standards and preserve its architectural heritage, reinforcing the region’s appeal to discerning visitors.
