AMPHITHEATRE BUILT ACCORDING TO THE DESIGN BY VOJTEH RAVNIKAR

Nova Gorica, the European Capital of Culture 2025, unveiled a new open-air amphitheatre at the Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica as part of the international GO! 2025 project, thereby completing one of the city’s key cultural infrastructure investments after three decades. The new venue, with nearly 500 seats, represents a strategic enhancement of the theatre complex and an important asset for the city’s future.

The architectural design follows the original spatial logic of the theatre complex as conceived by the architect Vojteh Ravnikar. As such, the structure is not merely a functional extension, but the completion of a cohesive architectural composition. The open-air stage offers exceptional genre diversity—from classical drama productions, contemporary performance, and dance productions to concerts, literary evenings, and festivals. At the same time, the open space encourages collaboration with other institutions, non-governmental organisations, and cross-border partners.

A cross-border space of encounters

With this infrastructural development, Nova Gorica is further strengthening its position as a cultural centre of the wider Gorizia region. The amphitheatre is not merely a performance venue, but a public space of encounter that connects the local community, artists, and visitors from the broader cross-border area.

Mirjam Drnovšček, Director of the Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica, highlighted at the laying of the foundation stone: “The outdoor auditorium is a major acquisition for the SNG Nova Gorica, as it enables new forms of performance practice. We have been waiting for an outdoor auditorium since the theatre was built almost thirty years ago, and we are pleased that the complex has finally been completed in the way the architect Vojteh Ravnikar envisioned.”

Event organisers can host open-air events, festivals, and other creative gatherings at this venue. The amphitheatre has enhanced access to cultural content and helped consolidate Nova Gorica’s position as one of the key cultural hubs in the Primorska region.
