With the official inauguration of the Pical Resort in Poreč, Croatia has gained what is widely regarded as the largest single investment in the history of the country’s tourism. Developed by Valamar Riviera and valued at approximately €200 million, the five-star resort marks a significant milestone in positioning Croatia as a leading Mediterranean destination in the high-value, year-round tourism segment and is a boon for event organisers.

The resort was officially inaugurated in the presence of Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, members of the national government, regional and local officials, business representatives and tourism stakeholders. During the ceremony, government and industry leaders highlighted the project’s significance not only for Poreč and Istria, but also for the broader development of Croatian tourism.

Pical Resort, operating under the Valamar Collection brand, has been conceived as a luxury destination that combines premium accommodation, wellness and leisure facilities, high-end gastronomy, sports infrastructure, and a modern congress centre. The project is designed to strengthen Croatia’s appeal beyond the traditional summer season and attract higher-spending guests year-round.

The resort offers 514 accommodation units with a total capacity of approximately 1,600 guests. Valamar has emphasised that the investment aims not only to elevate the quality of the destination’s tourism product but also to generate substantial economic benefits for the local community through employment, supplier partnerships and increased fiscal revenues.

Transitioning into a premium tourist destination

The opening of Pical Resort forms part of a broader transformation of Poreč into a premium tourism destination. Alongside other recent investments in hospitality and gastronomy, the project reinforces Istria’s reputation as one of the most developed and competitive tourism regions in the Adriatic. Valamar has described the resort as a cornerstone of its long-term strategy focused on premium offerings, sustainability and year-round operations.

Beyond its architectural and hospitality dimensions, the Pical Resort carries symbolic importance. It reflects the growing emphasis on quality, innovation and sustainability within Croatia’s tourism industry, signalling a shift away from volume-driven growth towards higher value creation.
