THE MOST CASTLE-LIKE OF CASTLES IN SLOVENIA

Podsreda Castle is one of the few castles in Slovenia to have hosted cultural events continuously for centuries. Over the past thirty years, following a comprehensive restoration, it has become an important centre of cultural, promotional, educational, social and tourism activities in this part of Slovenia. The castle is particularly known for its lively summer programme, when it welcomes both Slovenian and international artists and creators. Often described as “the most castle-like of castles in Slovenia”, Podsreda Castle dates back to the 12th century.

The castle is particularly vibrant on warm summer evenings, when concerts by renowned Slovenian and international musicians take place in the arcaded courtyard as part of the Musical Summer at Podsreda Castle programme. Similar to Ljubljana Castle, the castle also hosts an annual open-air cinema under the stars. Podsreda Castle is likewise committed to a sustainability-oriented vision that connects its rich heritage with the preservation of the natural environment. As custodians of this valuable estate, its managers have pledged to reduce environmental impact through green practices. The castle has recently been awarded the Green Key certificate.

Event organisers can host their events in the impressive Renaissance Hall at Podsreda Castle, which can accommodate up to 100 participants. The castle provides an ideal setting for conferences, meetings, family gatherings, celebrations and a wide range of social occasions. In addition to the Renaissance Hall, events can also be held in the lower service building, a smaller hall in the defensive tower, and the castle kitchen. Organisers may also make use of the inner courtyard (atrium) as well as the large outer castle courtyard.

Did you know?

Each year, Podsreda hosts the Praznik kozjanskega jabolka (Festival of the Kozjansko Apple). Apples from traditional high-stem meadow orchards are a symbol of nature conservation, the continuation of local traditions and heritage, well-being and healthy food, as well as a recognisable emblem of the protected area of Kozjansko Regional Park. Participants can enjoy locally grown apples before, during or after their event — a simple yet authentic taste of the region’s identity.
