THE WHITE SHIP REFUSING TO AGE

LOCATION

The pièce de résistance of architect Nikola Bašić recalls a grand white vessel anchored at the Mandalina peninsula. In nearly a decade, D-Resort Šibenik has become an inseparable part of the city’s panorama. Without its undulating, concrete-clad facade, we can no longer imagine Šibenik. Built on the site of the former Kuline military barracks, the hotel has given the Mandalina peninsula a new lease of life. Rather than copy the historic city centre, it offers a confident modern counterbalance.

Its phenomenal location, adjoining the megayacht marina, ensures direct access to the sea and sweeping views of Šibenik, while preserving a sense of privacy.

Since our last visit and evaluation, management has changed hands. Opened in 2015 by Turkish group Doğuş, the resort is now in the hands of Vila Dubrovnik, owned entirely by the Erste Plavi pension fund. Unlike other resorts competing for more meeting halls or hotel rooms, D-Resort Šibenik stands out through its boutique design, architecture, marina, and one of the most iconic hotel locations on Croatia’s coast.

ACCESSIBILITY

Since we last assessed the resort, accessibility has changed drastically. Its key advantage is its proximity to the airports in Split and Zadar, both about half an hour away. In the summer season 2026, the airport offers some 70 direct connections, opening Šibenik’s doors to Europe’s emerging and established markets. Guests can park in a spacious parking garage or the outdoor parking lot, both dotted with electric charging stations.

With well-maintained entry to the event surfaces, the hotel is also ideal for automotive launches, which it has hosted numerous times before.

Moving around the city has become incomparably easier, too. Uber functions surprisingly well in Šibenik, and the hotel offers bike rental. The old town can be reached by driving or by taking the more scenic route with the boat taxi. An additional advantage is the location amidst three national parks: Krka, Kornati and Paklenica. Today, accessibility is undoubtedly better than when we first visited. Combined with the advantage of the versatile marina, the location is first-class.

COLD STARTER - Architecture and aesthetics

The material is robust, almost brutalist, yet softened by glass surfaces, wood and Mediterranean greenery and shrubs.

Renowned Croatian architect Nikola Bašić is the mastermind behind the resort’s organic architecture. The undulating, wave-like shape of the hotel follows the silhouette of the Mandalina peninsula, facing the azure sea almost like a humongous white ship. The elementary building block of the design is coarse white concrete with visible traces of wooden panelling. The material is robust, almost brutalist, yet softened by glass surfaces, wood and Mediterranean greenery and shrubs. A peculiarity of the design is the constant transition between the interior and exterior. The sea enters the story through vast panoramic glass surfaces. Interior pieces go beyond the interior itself; they are present on the terraces and outdoor surfaces. The most dramatic element is the wooden walkway atop the hotel, functioning as a viewing platform and one of the most sought-after hotel event venues in the Adriatic. The interior is the brainchild of architect Marko Murtić. He balanced the raw, exposed concrete construction with warm shades of wood, a subdued colour palette, and carefully selected designer furniture. As a holistic entity, the hotel is tailored down to the last detail, including the surrounding hundred-year-old pine trees preserved during construction. Even a decade after opening, the architecture remains the hotel’s genius loci. More importantly, perhaps, the materials used remain fresh and timeless.

WARM ENTRÉE - The staff and the culinary experience

The entire resort team creates a relaxed, youthful and modern ambience that pairs perfectly with the architectural soul of the hotel. Their conspicuous uniforms and courteous, Mediterranean-like way of communication play a key role. While the ebullient youthfulness of the team can be a great advantage, it is also a drawback when the hotel is fully booked. During our visit, the staff did not always succeed in keeping up with the needs of a large number of guests. This was most evident at breakfast.

We had hoped there would be more confidence, local character and consistency mirrored in the dishes.

Although the selection of dishes was diverse and abundant, including international options, the organisation, speed of refilling the buffet stations, and quality of dishes fell short of the standards of a hotel of this category. The disparity between the resort’s ambitious image and its execution was simply too great to overlook. The cuisine nonetheless has strong foundations, revolving around modern twists on Mediterranean classics. We had hoped there would be more confidence, local character and consistency mirrored in the dishes. While there is great potential, gastronomy remains a segment where the hotel has ample space to improve.

MAIN COURSE – The meetings offering at the hotel

Hotel rooms

On this occasion, we stayed in the Superior Room. Thanks to the hotel’s curved design, the rooms overlook the sea from both sides of the property, with only the vistas changing slightly: one side looks out over the old city centre and the bay of Šibenik, while the other faces the marina lined with megayachts. The room itself is spacious, functional and thoughtfully designed. There is ample room for personal belongings even for longer stays, which business guests are sure to cherish. One of the room’s key assets is the wood-clad balcony, functioning as a natural extension of the room.

The warm hues of the wood enrich the coarse, raw aesthetics of the concrete walls.

Cabinets, nightstands and other pieces are elevated from the floor and thus appear to almost levitate. Despite the concrete, the space is airy, warm and unusually inviting. Artworks by renowned Croatian painter Tomislav Buntak, created especially for the hotel, imbue the room with a singular identity. The entire experience of staying here is enriched by the extremely comfortable bed that ensures guests wake up well-rested. The near-perfect experience is marred only by tiny technical drawbacks. The water pressure in the shower could be a tad stronger. Of course, this remark is hairsplitting, but something we noticed nonetheless.

Meetings centre

The congress centre and wellness are tucked away in a separate facility, adjoining the Yacht Club. The central multipurpose hall can accommodate up to 160 attendees and can be divided into three smaller units. Flooded with natural daylight, the halls have direct access to the terrace and overlook the sea. The offering is functional and flexible enough to cater to business meetings, product launches, workshops and smaller conferences.

It is the combination of architecture, sea and diverse outdoor surfaces that infuses events with a strong sense of place.

Yet the real competitive advantage of D-Resort Šibenik is not its classic conference halls. The hotel stands out primarily thanks to its outdoor venues that have convinced a host of event organisers before. Adjacent to the marina, the stunning amphitheatre is ideal for receptions, launches and smaller concerts. At the same time, the voluminous plateau next to the megayachts enables event organisers to host large-scale evening events and automotive launches. The entire offering is further enriched by the Yacht Club, the Peninsula Grill & Bar and the rooftop terrace boasting panoramic views of Šibenik. It is this combination of architecture, sea and diverse outdoor surfaces that infuses events with a strong sense of place. D-Resort Šibenik is thus no run-of-the-mill conference hotel but a setting for boutique events, where the property becomes an integral part of the story.

DESSERT – The extras

Automotive events might not have been in the focus of the hotel’s designers, yet the resort proved to be an ideal setting for four-wheeled launches. An extensive list of past projects is no coincidence. Spacious plateaus, direct vehicle access, a spacious garage, electric charging stations and a photogenic location unlike any other create extraordinary conditions for launching new products. Add to the mix winding Dalmatian roads and near-car-free road sections in the hinterland, and it is no wonder why big car manufacturers love to return. Even though the hotel did not plan to host automotive events, such events seem to have found D-Resort Šibenik.

FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES

The wellness centre is aesthetically sophisticated and well-appointed. Yet, when fully booked, it quickly reaches its limits. Crowds and the search for vacant loungers then replace intimacy. For a hotel of this calibre and size, we would have expected more relaxation surfaces. The spa is excellent, as long as too many guests don’t flock there at once.

TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES

D-Resort Šibenik’s greatest luxury is not nestled within the hotel, but sits just outside its doors. Šibenik’s archipelago, combined with Kornati National Park, is a dreamscape for nautical incentive programmes. Kaprije, Krapanj, Prvić, Zlarin and Žirje offer sailing, local cuisine and an authentic island experience without the noise of crowds. As the programme begins right in the marina, the path from the hotel room to an unforgettable experience is surprisingly short. This is an advantage offered only by a handful of Adriatic hotels. A big LIKE!

SUSTAINABLE ENDEAVOURS

D-Resort Šibenik boasts the Green Key certificate. While there are sustainable foundations, guests can hardly notice them while staying here. Communication about measures, results and goals is too generic. Even though the certificate is a good start, the hotel should tell its story in more concrete terms and more vocally.

CREATIVITY

D-Resort requires no extra scenography, as the hotel curates its own. Bašić’s architecture, Buntak’s artwork, a private marina dotted with yachts and views of Šibenik form a setting that cannot be selected from a catalogue.

The hotel’s creative force hides in the carte blanche it offers to event organisers, not its decor.

Here, the roof becomes the stage, the amphitheatre turns into the living room and the plateau transforms into a car store. The hotel’s creative force hides in the carte blanche it offers to event organisers, not its decor. The best events that take place here don’t aim to change the property, but let the resort tell its story.

FINAL IMPRESSION AND CREDIBILITY

Our second evaluation of D-Resort Šibenik confirms a rare phenomenon among hotels: this resort is maturing gracefully. What is more, it seems even better and more developed than when it opened. Back then, we noted that the hotel’s assets seemed boundless. A decade later, this finding still stands true. The rooms are among the best in its class. They are spacious, thoughtfully arranged and fitted with materials that create a more prestigious feeling than expected. Architectural slip-ups are few, and the guest experience remains convincing.

D-Resort is doubtless one of the finest incentive hotels across the Adriatic, without serious competition in its category.

The hotel’s trademark is its design. Undressed concrete construction, wood, artworks and the contact with the sea create a singular character that no other hotel can imitate. Even a decade since opening its doors, D-Resort shows new views and details. It is not without mistakes, however. When fully occupied, breakfast and wellness bear the brunt of the visiting masses. That does not change our final impression, though. D-Resort is doubtless one of the finest incentive hotels across the Adriatic, without serious competition in its category. We also appreciate the reasonable value-for-money ratio, which is not always the case in Croatian five-star hotels. The impression of our second visit largely echoes our first. We can still recommend D-Resort unreservedly. We know it shall not disappoint.
