With 2,648 photovoltaic modules installed at the Messe Innsbruck, Congress Innsbruck, and Congresspark Igls sites, Congress Messe Innsbruck is making targeted investments to generate its own electricity from solar energy. The new installations contribute to the company-wide sustainability strategy and underline CMI’s commitment, as the leading operator of Tyrolean event venues, to taking responsibility for the environment and the region.

New solar power systems at all three CMI sites

The largest expansion is at the Messe Innsbruck site: 2,431 modules have been installed on the roofs of Halls A and D. This is complemented by additional systems at Congress Innsbruck (112 modules) and Congresspark IGLs (105 modules). The solar energy generated is used directly at the sites and helps to meet part of the electricity demand through self-generated solar power. Since the systems were commissioned, they have generated over 1,459 MWh of solar power, resulting in CO2 savings of around 1,167 tons.

A signal for the location and its future viability

Innsbruck’s Mayor, Johannes Anzengruber, speaking as the representative of the majority shareholder, welcomes this investment: “The new photovoltaic systems will generate solar power on-site from the venue’s own roofs: with this investment in solar energy, Congress Messe Innsbruck is taking an important step towards a sustainable energy supply. This not only strengthens the company, but also Innsbruck as a forward-looking events venue.”

Mario Gerber, Regional Minister for Economic Affairs, sees the project as a major boost: “By expanding photovoltaic capacity at all three sites, Congress Messe Innsbruck is making a targeted investment in modern and efficient infrastructure. This strengthens Innsbruck as an events destination, creates reliable long-term conditions for conferences, trade fairs and events, and demonstrates how economic foresight and regional value creation can successfully go hand in hand.”

Sebiye Cara, President of the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce’s Trade Fair Division, emphasises the importance of the project: “The future is taking shape at our trade fair and event venues. This makes it even more important that we lead the way with our own infrastructure too. With the new photovoltaic systems, Congress Messe Innsbruck is taking responsibility as a leading organisation. In doing so, we are investing in sustainability and in a modern event venue that will remain attractive and competitive well into the future.”

Investment in an efficient event infrastructure

Hansjörg Stern, interim managing director of Congress Messe Innsbruck, emphasises the importance of the investment: “With the new solar panels, we are making efficient use of existing roof space and can generate a significant proportion of our electricity requirements ourselves. Thanks to the foresight of our shareholders, we are able to consistently implement forward-looking investments such as this one.”

Expansion complements existing sustainability measures

With over 400 events and more than half a million visitors each year, Congress Messe Innsbruck is the leading venue among Tyrolean event centres. The new photovoltaic systems mark another important milestone in the long-term development of the energy supply for the three venues: Congress Innsbruck, Messe Innsbruck, and congresspark igls. Congress Messe Innsbruck is a Climate Alliance organisation and holds the international Green Globe sustainability certification. As an Austrian Ecolabel holder, it enables congresses, conferences, trade fairs, and events of all sizes to be held as ‘Green Events’ at all three venues.
