At the Residence of the Mayor of Prague, the Society of Architects presented the success of Prague’s candidacy for the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture 2029-2032 title and the organisation of the UIA World Congress of Architects (International Union of Architects) and the UIA General Assembly. It offers the capital city an opportunity to strengthen its position on the international architectural scene and to promote an academic and public program focused on architecture, urbanism, cultural heritage, and quality of life in the city over several years.
Prague as an architectural capital
Prague will hold the title of UNESCO World Capital of Architecture – UIA World Capital of Architecture from 2029 to 2032. In 2032, participants of the UIA World Congress of Architects will gather in Prague, and the city will present its own program dedicated to architecture, urbanism, cultural heritage, public space and contemporary development.
The four-year period will offer space for the presentation of Czech architecture, international cooperation, professional meetings, education and a program for the public. An important part will also be the capability to explain architecture as a public topic: as a matter that concerns not only architects, but also housing, transport, schools, parks, streets, cultural heritage and the everyday functioning of the city.
The entire period will culminate in 2032, when Prague will host the UIA World Congress of Architects.
The congress brings together architects, urban planners, landscape architects, academics, students, city and public administration representatives, cultural institutions and other experts. It offers lectures, expert debates, project presentations, exchange of experience and direct dialogue on how cities should respond to current social, climate and technological challenges. Prague will thus have several years to engage the professional scene, public administration, cultural institutions, schools, city districts, partners and residents in the preparation. The goal is for the title to leave a lasting professional and public footprint and contribute to the long-term development of the city.

For the host city, the congress also offers an opportunity to showcase its architecture and how it approaches development. Prague in 2032 will not only become the venue for an international event. It will be given the opportunity to show how it adds new layers of architecture to its historical heritage, how it handles public space, and what ambitions it has in the field of urbanism and quality of life.
